Meet Atlas — a little boy whose eight months of life were filled with extraordinary courage, countless medical battles and a resilience that left his family in awe.

Atlas was born prematurely at 34 weeks, already facing several complex heart conditions, including DORV, d-TGA, VSD, ASD and pulmonary atresia. He was born more than two hours from home so he could receive care at a hospital known for its pediatric cardiac expertise.

For almost his entire life, Atlas remained in the CVICU. His family treasured every precious moment they could have with him, including the brief week he was strong enough to come home and 10 days when he stayed with his mother at the Ronald McDonald House.

Atlas underwent open-heart surgery and a Rastelli procedure in an effort to help his heart function. His recovery was incredibly difficult, and he spent the following three months deeply sedated and medically supported while doctors worked to give his fragile body time to heal.

Throughout his short life, Atlas repeatedly showed just how determined he was. He experienced five cardiac arrests and was successfully resuscitated four times. He also spent 14 days on ECMO during one period of critical illness and another 10 days when he needed the extraordinary support again.

Yet every time his family thought they had reached the hardest moment, Atlas seemed to find another reason to keep going.

“He was always proving people wrong,” his mother shared. “He would get one last chance at something, and then somehow he would excel.”

Atlas passed away on January 25, just one day after reaching his eight-month birthday.

For his mother, his name now carries an even deeper meaning.

“I wouldn’t have known how much he would live up to the name of the mythological Greek Titan,” she said. “He is my Titan, and he carried the world.”

Looking back on his journey, she says the strength Atlas showed from the very beginning was something she will never forget.

“His resilience was something astonishing to me. He fought through things no baby should ever have to face, and he gave us more precious moments than we could have imagined.”

Although Atlas had only eight months in this world, his family believes his story will stay with them forever.

He may have been tiny, but to the people who loved him, Atlas carried something enormous — their hopes, their love, and the memory of a little boy who never stopped fighting for another chance.
