POLICE CLEARED OF BLAME AS NEW DETAILS EMERGE IN DEADLY A66 CRASH

MIDDLESBROUGH, England — New details have emerged about the devastating A66 crash that claimed the lives of seven people, including two Cleveland Police officers, after early reports raised questions about whether a police pursuit had contributed to the collision.

Investigators have now provided a clearer timeline of what happened in the moments before the crash, challenging claims that the five young people inside the vehicle were still being pursued by officers when the collision occurred.

POLICE PURSUIT HAD ALREADY ENDED

According to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), Cleveland Police officers had been following the Volkswagen Passat before the vehicle entered the A66 traveling in the wrong direction.

However, the pursuit was called off before the fatal collision.

The IOPC said the pursuit lasted just under seven minutes before officers stopped pursuing the vehicle. The Passat then entered the A66 traveling against traffic.

Approximately 10 seconds later, it collided with a marked police vehicle carrying two officers.

The officers, PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, died in the collision.

SEVEN LIVES LOST

Five people inside the Passat also died.

They were identified as Michael Cahill, 23; Jakub Matusiak, 23; Makai Saddington, 18; Theo Rae, 17; and Cole Worthy, 17.

The crash sent shockwaves through the local community, while the circumstances leading up to the collision immediately came under intense scrutiny.

Early reports that the vehicle may have been fleeing from police fueled questions about whether the pursuit itself had played a role.
