MONTANA FAMILY MASSACRE: MAN KILLS 8 RELATIVES, INCLUDING 4 CHILDREN, BEFORE HOUSE IS SET ABLAZE

BILLINGS, Mont. — A Sunday family dinner near Billings, Montana, turned into an unimaginable massacre when a 44-year-old man allegedly opened fire on his own relatives, killing eight members of his family — including four children spanning four generations — before the home was engulfed in flames.

The suspect, identified by family members and authorities as Alan Smith, 44, also died after suffering what investigators described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The devastating attack unfolded on Sunday, Aug. 23, at a residence outside Billings. Investigators are still working to establish a motive, but relatives told The Associated Press that Smith’s parents had asked him to move out of their home several weeks before the shooting.

EIGHT MEMBERS OF ONE FAMILY WERE KILLED

The victims represented four generations of the same extended family.

They included Smith’s parents, Dana Smith, 73, and Barbara “Barb” Smith, 72; his grandmother, Evelyn Smith, 92; his sister, Megan Ghekiere, 39; and four children — Owen Ireland, 13, Chloe Ireland, 7, Landon Ghekiere, 15, and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12.

The family had gathered for Sunday dinner when the violence erupted.

According to relatives, the gathering was unusual because the family normally held its weekly dinner on Fridays.

What began as an ordinary family meal would become the final gathering for eight people.

A 12-YEAR-OLD TRIED TO SAVE HER FAMILY

One of the most heartbreaking details to emerge involves 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere.

Family friend Jennifer Mercer told the AP that Charlotte called 911 during the shooting and tried to get help for her family.

Loved ones have described the seventh-grader as a hero for attempting to alert authorities while the attack was unfolding.

But Charlotte was ultimately among those killed.

Her family has since been trying to make sure her final actions are remembered.

Her father, Adam Ghekiere, has also spoken publicly about the loss of his daughter, remembering her as a loving child whose affectionate phrase was, “I love you more.”

THE HOUSE BURST INTO FLAMES

The situation became even more chaotic when the family home caught fire.

Billings-area officers responded shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday following reports of a family disturbance and gunfire.

When officers arrived, they heard additional shots coming from behind the residence.

The house soon became engulfed in flames.

Firefighters faced dangerous conditions because gunfire was still being reported, while the lack of city fire hydrants in the rural subdivision also complicated the response.

The blaze destroyed much of the property and made the recovery and investigation significantly more difficult.

Authorities have not publicly established the exact cause of the fire.

A FATHER RUSHED HOME AFTER HEARING THE ALERT

Among those left devastated is Adam Ghekiere, Megan’s husband and the father and stepfather of four of the children who died.

Ghekiere was working as an airport rescue firefighter when he heard about the active shooting over a department communication system.

He tried calling his family.

Then he raced toward the home.

By the time he arrived, the property was burning.

He would eventually learn that his wife and children were among the dead.

The tragedy therefore struck an entire family at once, leaving surviving relatives to mourn multiple generations simultaneously.

RELATIVES DESCRIBED SMITH AS A RECLUSE

Family members told the AP that Smith had lived with his parents for years and spent much of his time alone.

Brad Ireland, the former husband of Megan and father of Owen and Chloe, described Smith as a “hermit” who spent large amounts of time on his computer.

Other accounts have emerged describing troubling behavior within the family, including allegations of verbal abuse.

However, authorities have said there had been no previous police contact or reports involving Smith, according to reporting from the New York Post.

The precise circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.

THE QUESTION THAT REMAINS: WHY?

Investigators have not publicly announced a definitive motive.

The fact that Smith’s parents had reportedly asked him to leave their home weeks before the massacre has emerged as one possible piece of the timeline, but authorities have not said that the dispute directly caused the killings.

Sheriff’s officials have also pushed back against rumors surrounding the victims, describing them as an ordinary American family caught in an extraordinary tragedy.

Autopsies and additional forensic work are expected to provide investigators with more information.

LANDON AND CHARLOTTE’S FUTURES WERE JUST BEGINNING

The loss of the four children has been especially devastating.

Landon Ghekiere, 15, was preparing to begin his sophomore year. Family members remembered him as a protective older brother who was excited about eventually getting his driver’s license.

Charlotte, 12, was preparing for seventh grade.

She was remembered as funny and adventurous, with a particular love of turning over rocks and searching for bugs.

Owen Ireland, 13, and Chloe Ireland, 7, were also killed.

Four children who should have been preparing for another school year instead became victims of one of Montana’s most devastating family killings.

A COMMUNITY IS NOW RALLYING AROUND THE SURVIVORS

As investigators continue their work, friends and relatives have established fundraisers to help the surviving family members with funeral expenses, counseling and other costs.

Community members have also organized memorial efforts to honor the victims.

More than $200,000 had reportedly been raised through GoFundMe campaigns as of Aug. 27, reflecting the extraordinary level of support for the family.

For those who knew the victims, the focus is now shifting from the horror of the crime to remembering who they were before their lives were taken.
