HEROIC 12-YEAR-OLD SURVIVES DEVASTATING SCHOOL SHOOTING AFTER TRYING TO PROTECT HER CLASSMATES

On February 10, 2026, twelve-year-old Maya Gębala found herself trapped in a living nightmare inside the library of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia when an active gunman opened fire. As terrified students scrambled to find cover and escape, Maya and a few of her classmates desperately tried to secure the library door. However, they quickly realized the mechanism was broken. Instead of running immediately to save herself, Maya stayed behind for a few crucial seconds to keep trying to lock the door so others could escape safely. In those selfless moments, she was shot three times, suffering severe and life-threatening injuries to her head and neck.

After being airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital in critical condition, Maya underwent multiple complex emergency surgeries. Her condition was so grave at one point that medical staff were forced to consider end-of-life care options for her. Miraculously, Maya began showing unexpected signs of improvement, eventually leaving the intensive care unit to begin a long and challenging journey toward recovery and rehabilitation.
