Florida Jury Recommends Death Penalty 33 Years After 12-Year-Old Girl’s Murder

A Florida jury has unanimously recommended the death penalty for 65-year-old Jeffrey Norman Crum Sr., more than three decades after the murder of 12-year-old Jennifer Renee Odom.

On August 25, 2026, a jury in Hernando County, Florida, voted 12–0 to recommend that Crum receive the death penalty.

Crum had just been convicted of kidnapping, sexual assault, and first-degree murder in connection with Jennifer Odom’s 1993 killing.

Jennifer, who was only 12 years old, disappeared in February 1993 after getting off her school bus. Her body was discovered six days later in an abandoned orange grove.

The case remained unresolved for more than 33 years before Crum was arrested, prosecuted, and ultimately convicted.

The unanimous recommendation marks a major development in the long-running case, but it is important to note that the jury’s vote is a recommendation rather than the final punishment. The judge will make the final determination regarding Crum’s sentence.

The case highlights the extraordinary length of time that passed between Jennifer’s death and the latest court decision, with approximately 33 years separating the 1993 murder from the jury’s death-penalty recommendation in 2026.
