“HE WAS MY SON”: BELOVED BABY DONKEY HEEHAW KILLED BY POLICE DURING MISSING-CHILD SEARCH

A family in Georgia is demanding answers after their beloved miniature donkey, HeeHaw, was fatally shot by a police officer during a late-night search for a missing child.

The heartbreaking incident happened around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at Elsberry Riding and Farm in Rockmart, Polk County.

According to the donkey’s owner, Hannah Israel, officers entered the family’s pasture while searching for a missing child.

Then HeeHaw approached.

He was reportedly braying and running toward the officers.

Minutes later, the one-year-old donkey was gone.

“HE THOUGHT PEOPLE WERE HIS FAMILY”

Israel said HeeHaw had been bottle-fed from birth and was exceptionally comfortable around people.

He was reportedly taken to petting zoos and interacted with children and adults.

“He thought people were his family,” Israel said, according to local reports.

The family says officers told them HeeHaw ran toward them while braying and that an officer believed he posed a threat.

According to the family’s account, the officer first attempted to use a Taser before fatally shooting the donkey.

Those details remain part of the ongoing investigation and have not been independently established by authorities.

THE CHILD THEY WERE SEARCHING FOR WAS FOUND SAFE

The officers were not originally at the property because of HeeHaw.

They were assisting with a nighttime search for a missing child.

Cedartown officials confirmed that the child had not yet been located when the shooting occurred.

Thankfully, the child was later found safe at a nearby church.

OFFICER PLACED ON PAID LEAVE

The Cedartown Police Department confirmed that one of its officers fatally shot a donkey while assisting Polk County police.

The unidentified officer has been placed on paid administrative leave while the circumstances are investigated.

The case has been turned over to the Georgia Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement Division.

Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome said he was heartbroken over what happened and requested an investigation.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has also clarified that its deputies were not involved in the shooting.

But Israel says the fundraising is not about personal profit.

Her message is that HeeHaw’s life cannot be measured in money.
