THE LIFE AND ONGOING JOURNEY OF PAN XIANHANG, CHINA’S “FISH BOY”

Born in Wenling, Zhejiang province in eastern China, Pan Xianhang faced extraordinary physical challenges from the very moment he entered the world. Diagnosed at birth with a severe form of ichthyosis—a rare genetic skin disorder derived from the ancient Greek word for fish, ichthys—his skin became exceptionally thick, dry, hardened, and covered in scale-like plates. This distinctive appearance led local residents and media to widely refer to him as the “Fish Boy.”

Living with severe ichthyosis creates immense daily suffering and physical limitations. The dense, inflexible scales obstruct normal sweat gland function, preventing the body from regulating temperature naturally and leaving the individual at constant risk of severe overheating. Simple movements cause painful cracks and fissures across the skin, requiring continuous, intensive moisturization and careful hygiene to soothe the surface and prevent dangerous bacterial infections. Even sleeping comfortably or wearing basic clothing presents severe challenges for anyone managing this complex condition.

Despite the severe medical obstacles and the emotional weight of living with a highly visible disfigurement, Pan Xianhang’s life stands as a testament to human resilience and parental dedication. His family and community have continually sought specialized medical care and treatments to alleviate his daily pain, manage the symptoms, and grant him a better quality of life.
