“HE WAS MY KID”: BELOVED BABY DONKEY HEEHAW FATALLY SHOT BY POLICE DURING MISSING-CHILD SEARCH

A routine search for a missing child in Georgia took a heartbreaking turn when a police officer fatally shot a one-year-old pet donkey named HeeHaw on a family farm.

Now, the animal’s owner is demanding answers over why the young donkey was considered a threat — and why officers were on the property in the first place.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday, Aug. 30, at Elsberry Riding & Farm in Rockmart, Georgia, during a search for a missing child.

According to the Cedartown Police Department, one of its officers was assisting Polk County authorities with the search. The child was later found safely at a nearby church.

But before that search ended, HeeHaw was gone.

HE WAS RAISED INSIDE THE FAMILY HOME

For Hannah Israel, HeeHaw was never simply livestock.

She said she bottle-raised the donkey from just one hour old, treating him like a member of the family.

HeeHaw had recently celebrated his first birthday and had become a familiar face at the farm’s petting-zoo events. He was also taken to mobile petting zoos around the community.

Israel described him as exceptionally friendly — an animal who loved people and other animals and routinely followed her around the property.

“He was my kid,” she said while mourning his loss.

That makes what happened next even more difficult for the family to understand.

POLICE SAY THE DONKEY APPROACHED

According to accounts provided to the media, officers and a K-9 team were moving through the property while searching for the missing child when they encountered HeeHaw.

Israel said police later told her that HeeHaw was running toward the officers while braying.

Officers reportedly attempted to use a Taser before the animal was fatally shot.

But Israel believes what officers interpreted as threatening behavior may simply have been the normal behavior of a friendly donkey approaching strangers.

“That would be normal for him because he’s saying hi,” she said.

A police incident report cited by World Animal News identified the officer as Trenton Garner and said the donkey “began to charge” at officers.

The precise sequence of events remains under investigation, and authorities have not publicly released the full circumstances surrounding the use of force.

THE OWNER QUESTIONS HOW OFFICERS ENTERED THE PROPERTY

Israel has also raised another major question: how officers came onto the farm.

She said her family was not notified that officers were searching the property and questioned why the officers were inside the pasture.

The Guardian reported that the family said officers entered the property without prior notification or permission. The family has disputed the characterization of HeeHaw as a genuine threat.

Israel said the family is now seeking legal advice and wants answers about what happened that night.

She has also called for better training and clearer procedures when law enforcement encounters animals while responding to emergencies.

OFFICER PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE

The Cedartown Police Department has placed the officer involved on administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

Police Chief Jamie Newsome said the department recognizes the grief caused by the loss and that the matter has been turned over to the Georgia Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement Division for further investigation.

Authorities have not announced any criminal charges against the officer.

The investigation is expected to examine what happened when officers encountered HeeHaw, what officers believed the animal was doing, whether less-lethal options were attempted, and the circumstances under which officers entered the property.

THE CHILD WAS FOUND SAFE

Amid the controversy, one fact has remained clear: the missing child officers were searching for was eventually located safely.

The child was found at a nearby church, according to authorities and local reports.

But for the Israel family, the successful search cannot erase the loss that occurred on their property.

HeeHaw — the young donkey they had raised from infancy — will not be coming home.

“THE FARM IS DEFINITELY NOT THE SAME”

Israel said the farm has felt completely different since HeeHaw’s passing.

She remembers him following her around like a dog and being close to the family every day.

She had expected to have many more years with him.

Instead, the family is now facing the painful task of moving forward without the animal they considered part of their household.

The incident has also triggered a wave of public reaction online, with supporters demanding transparency and accountability.

A fundraising campaign created by Israel has drawn significant financial support for the family’s legal efforts and the farm’s animals.

For now, the investigation continues.

And as questions remain about the encounter between a police officer and a one-year-old donkey named HeeHaw, his owner is left with one heartbreaking question:
