A baby with two heads has been born in Bangladesh.

The newborn is actually conjoined twin sisters who share a single body, two arms and two legs. They were delivered by Caesarean late last night and are now receiving care for breathing difficulties in the intensive care unit of Bangladesh’s largest hospital in Dhaka.

Her father, Mia Jamal, said he was “awestruck” when he first saw his daughter.

“She has two fully developed heads. She is eating with two mouths and breathing with two noses,” he told AFP. “Still, I thank Allah that she and her mother are now OK.”

Tests showed the baby has only one set of vital organs, according to Abu Kawsar, owner of the Standard Hospital of Total Healthcare, where she was born.

Doctors believe the newborn may have dicephalic parapagus, an extremely rare form of conjoined twinning in which two heads develop on a single body.

Thousands of people gathered outside the hospital in Brahmanbaria after news of the unusual newborn spread, with some traveling from nearby villages to see her.

“It’s good that the baby has been shifted to Dhaka. Otherwise, it would have been difficult for us to control the crowd,” Kawsar said.

Her father, a poorly paid farm worker, said he was worried about how the family would manage any additional medical expenses.

“I feel sad for her. She has been born to a poor man. I don’t have money to even properly treat her mother,” he said.

Because the twins share one body and vital organs, doctors say this type of conjoined twinning cannot be separated.

The condition is exceptionally rare, with reported cases occurring mainly in parts of Asia and Africa.
