Jury Recommends Death Penalty for Jeffrey Norman Crum in 1993 Murder of 12-Year-Old Jennifer Odom

More than three decades after 12-year-old Jennifer Odom disappeared on her way home from school, a Florida jury has recommended the death penalty for the man convicted of killing her.

On August 25, 2026, a jury in Hernando County unanimously recommended that Jeffrey Norman Crum Sr., 65, receive the death penalty. The recommendation came just five days after Crum was convicted of first-degree murder, kidnapping and sexual battery in connection with Jennifer’s death.

Jennifer Disappeared on Her Way Home

Jennifer Odom was just 12 years old when she disappeared on February 19, 1993, after getting off her school bus and walking home in Hernando County, Florida.

Her body was discovered six days later in an abandoned orange grove, bringing a devastating end to the search for the young girl.

For more than 30 years, the case remained unresolved.

DNA Evidence Helped Revive the Case

Crum was arrested and charged in 2023, after investigators linked him to Jennifer’s case through DNA evidence and similarities between the circumstances of her killing and a 1992 assault.

On August 20, 2026, a jury found Crum guilty of the three charges stemming from Jennifer’s death.

Five days later, jurors unanimously recommended the ultimate punishment.

Death Penalty Recommendation Came on Jennifer’s Would-Be Birthday

The timing of the recommendation carried particular emotional significance for Jennifer’s family.

The decision was handed down on August 25, the day Jennifer Odom would have turned 46 years old.

After waiting more than 33 years for accountability, Jennifer’s family said they felt that justice had finally been served.

However, the jury’s decision is a recommendation, not the final sentence. Crum has not yet formally been sentenced to death, and the court will determine the final punishment in the next stage of the proceedings.
