A DISTURBING video from a beach in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has triggered outrage online after a group of people were filmed handling a young dolphin that was later found dead.

The footage, recorded at El Trampolín beach, shows several people surrounding the dolphin near the shoreline before one person lifts the animal from the water and carries it toward the rocks.

The images quickly spread across social media, with claims that the dolphin was deliberately beaten and killed.

But there is an important unanswered question:

Did the dolphin die because of what happened on the beach — or was it already dead or severely distressed when it was found?

WHAT THE VIDEO SHOWS

According to Spanish fact-checking outlet Newtral, the footage is genuine and was recorded at El Trampolín in Ceuta.

In the video, a young dolphin is seen outside the water while people gather around it. A man appears to tell those nearby that the animal should not be taken from the beach.

Another person can then be seen lifting the dolphin and carrying it away.

Witnesses quoted in the reporting said the people involved claimed the dolphin was already dead.

However, other local reports have alleged that the animal was alive when it was taken from shallow water and that at least one person struck it with a stick.

THE CLAIM THAT HAS NOT BEEN PROVEN

The most shocking versions of the story circulating online say the dolphin was intentionally beaten to death.

But investigators and fact-checkers have urged caution.

Newtral reported that it found no video evidence proving a fatal blow. Another fact-checking organization, Mimikama, likewise said the footage does not publicly establish that the animal was deliberately killed.

That distinction matters.

The dolphin was later found dead, and environmental organization DAUBMA filed a complaint with Spain’s Guardia Civil, asking authorities to investigate what happened and identify those responsible.

ANIMAL CRUELTY INVESTIGATION

DAUBMA says the animal was a protected bottlenose dolphin and believes the circumstances may constitute an offense involving animal mistreatment and protected wildlife.

The organization submitted photographs, videos and screenshots to authorities as part of its complaint.

Local reporting has presented a more definitive version of events, saying the dolphin was pulled from the water and struck with a stick before dying.

But because the publicly available footage does not establish the entire sequence, authorities will have to determine what actually happened.

SOCIAL MEDIA ERUPTS

The images have generated widespread anger, with many viewers demanding that anyone responsible be identified and prosecuted.

A petition has also circulated calling for action over the dolphin’s death.

Yet the controversy has also highlighted how quickly a disturbing video can be accompanied by claims that go beyond what the footage itself proves.

For now, one fact is clear:
