“GIVE MY SON THE SEND-OFF HE DESERVES” — A66 CRASH VICTIM’S MUM MAKES EMOTIONAL TRIBUTE REQUEST

The grieving mother of A66 crash victim Michael Cahill has made an emotional request to friends and mourners as she prepares to remember her 23-year-old son.

Michael was one of five young men who died when a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way along the A66 collided with a marked police vehicle on August 22.

Two police officers, PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, also lost their lives in the devastating collision.

Now Michael’s mother has asked friends to come together for a special tribute — with a very particular request.

She urged those attending to bring “bikes, jeeps, cars and quads” as part of a balloon release planned in Peterlee, County Durham, saying she wanted her son to receive “the send-off he deserves.”

A MOTHER’S FINAL TRIBUTE

For Michael’s family, the gathering is intended as a way of remembering a young man they loved.

But the request has also attracted attention because it comes after earlier memorial events connected to the A66 deaths descended into controversy.

A previous tribute linked to Michael reportedly ended with vehicles being set alight in a field, while another memorial involving A66 crash victims attracted large crowds, motorbikes, quad bikes and fireworks.

The scenes sparked anger among local residents and politicians, with concerns about dangerous riding, disruption and public safety.

Michael’s mother, however, has focused on remembering her son.

Her appeal was for friends to turn up with vehicles and help create a memorable farewell.

FIVE YOUNG MEN LOST

Michael Robert Cahill, 23, was among five occupants of the Volkswagen Passat who died in the August 22 crash.

The other young men were Jakub Matusiak, 23; Theo Rae, 17; Cole Worthy, 17; and Makai Saddington, 18.

The Passat had been travelling in the wrong direction on the A66 when it collided with a marked police vehicle.

PC Blades and PC Clough were also killed.

The tragedy has since triggered intense scrutiny, public anger and a major police operation in the Middlesbrough area.

TRIBUTE OR TROUBLE?

The latest memorial request has inevitably raised questions about what could happen when large numbers of vehicles gather again.

Authorities have already faced disruption surrounding previous tributes.

Ahead of Jakub Matusiak’s funeral, several schools in the Middlesbrough area announced early closures because of expected congestion and transport disruption.

Officials said the decisions were made after considering the potential impact on pupils, staff and families — while politicians debated whether such measures were necessary.

But for Michael’s grieving family, the message behind the tribute remains deeply personal.

They want people to remember Michael — not simply the circumstances in which he died.
