PASSENGER HAD TO BE RESTRAINED WITH DUCT TAPE AFTER MID-AIR MELTDOWN FORCED EMERGENCY LANDING

What began as a routine American Airlines flight suddenly turned into a terrifying mid-air confrontation when a passenger allegedly became so aggressive that fellow travelers and crew members had to restrain him with duct tape and zip ties.

American Airlines Flight 618 was traveling from Dallas to Newark on September 3 when the situation reportedly escalated about two hours into the journey.

The passenger, who was seated in first class, allegedly began shouting racial and homophobic slurs and became increasingly aggressive toward people around him.

According to witnesses cited by People, the confrontation quickly became physical.

The man allegedly assaulted at least two people, including passengers and flight attendants. At one point, he was accused of choking the passenger seated beside him and biting another person who intervened. 

PASSENGERS WERE FORCED TO STEP IN

As the disturbance continued, the crew and passengers realized the situation had become too dangerous to leave unchecked.

Several people intervened and managed to overpower the man.

They ultimately used duct tape and zip ties to secure him to his seat, keeping him restrained for the final portion of the flight.

The aircraft was only around 15 minutes from Baltimore when the passenger was finally subdued.

The pilots then diverted the Newark-bound flight to Baltimore/Washington International Airport, where police were waiting on the ground. 

Images and video reportedly showed the passenger sitting in his seat with tape wrapped around his body as other travelers looked on.

POLICE WERE WAITING WHEN THE PLANE LANDED

Once Flight 618 reached Baltimore, law enforcement officers boarded the aircraft and removed the disruptive passenger.

He was arrested by Maryland Transportation Authority Police and faces state charges, including second-degree assault and disorderly conduct, according to later reporting.

The FBI is also investigating to determine whether federal charges should be brought. 

The passenger’s identity was later reported as Arthur Layne Lundeen, 67, a Tucson, Arizona, real-estate professional. 

It remains unclear whether alcohol played a role. Reports say he had been served one drink during the flight, but authorities have not established that alcohol caused the behavior. 

AIRLINE PRAISES CREW AND PASSENGERS

American Airlines confirmed that Flight 618 was diverted because of a disruptive passenger and said the aircraft landed safely.

The FAA has also continued to track a large number of unruly-passenger incidents across U.S. aviation.

For the passengers aboard Flight 618, however, the statistics became a frightening reality.

A normal trip from Texas to New Jersey had turned into a scene where strangers were forced to physically restrain another passenger thousands of feet in the air.

And the most striking image from the incident was not the emergency landing itself.

It was the sight of a passenger bound to his seat with duct tape and zip ties while the aircraft continued toward an unexpected landing.

The FBI investigation remains ongoing, and authorities will determine whether additional federal charges are warranted. 
