People Called Her a “Monster” — But They Didn’t Know the Full Story.

When Brooke Atkins began sharing videos of her baby son Kingsley undergoing laser treatment, strangers online accused her of putting him through unnecessary pain simply because she disliked his birthmark.

But the reality was far more complicated.

Born in Queensland, Australia, in January 2022, Kingsley had a large port-wine stain covering much of one side of his face. Doctors soon discovered that he also had dangerously high pressure in one eye and diagnosed him with glaucoma. He eventually needed surgery to have a drainage implant placed in his eye.

Further testing led to another diagnosis: Sturge-Weber syndrome, a rare neurological condition that can cause seizures and other serious complications.

Doctors also recommended pulsed-dye laser treatment for Kingsley’s port-wine stain. The procedure targets abnormal blood vessels in the skin and is a medical treatment—not simply a cosmetic choice.

Yet online, Brooke was called abusive, a bad mother, and even a “monster.”

What strangers saw in a short video was only a tiny part of what this family was facing.

Brooke and her partner were following medical advice while their son underwent treatment and monitoring for serious health conditions.

Sometimes, a few seconds of a video are not enough to tell an entire family’s story.
