Luca Marshall Realmuto was born on March 2, weighing just two pounds after complications during pregnancy led to his premature arrival.

For the next five months, the tiny boy’s world was the NICU, surrounded by dedicated medical staff and separated from the family who desperately wanted to bring him home.

In a heartbreaking twist, Luca’s mother was a Registered Nurse who had spent years working in the very same NICU where her son was now being cared for. His father had also dedicated years to teaching children with special needs.

At first, Luca’s NICU journey seemed to be progressing as expected. But then doctors noticed that he was struggling to feed and could not finish his bottles.

Further testing revealed that Luca was aspirating, meaning feeding was not safe for him. Doctors recommended a G-tube to provide the nutrition he needed.

Luca underwent surgery for the feeding tube, along with a full scope to investigate the cause of his difficulties. During the procedure, surgeons also unexpectedly discovered and repaired a hernia.

After months of waiting, learning, worrying and hoping, Luca finally reached the moment his parents had dreamed about — he was able to go home.

But his journey was far from over.

Luca still needs regular medical care and several therapies, including physical, occupational and speech therapy. He also receives G-tube feeds every three hours, with continuous feeding overnight.

His parents have had to make major sacrifices to care for him. His mother took family medical leave to be by his side, while his father’s work has become sporadic.

“After five months, having Luca home with us feels like a blessing we waited so long for,” his family shared. “We know there will still be challenges ahead, but we are grateful for every smile, every little milestone and every day we get to have him with us.”

Doctors remain hopeful that, with time and continued therapy, Luca may one day be able to eat normally.

For this little boy who began life weighing only two pounds, every step forward is something worth celebrating.

Luca has already spent his first months showing his family what strength looks like. Now, surrounded by the people who love him most, he is finally beginning the next chapter of his remarkable journey.
