The Florida inmate convicted of killing Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz continues to challenge his death sentences as his legal battle moves forward.
Wade Steven Wilson remains on Florida’s death row more than two years after a Lee County jury convicted him of the 2019 murders of Kristine Melton, 35, and Diane Ruiz, 43.
Wilson was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder in June 2024 and was sentenced to death the following August. He is currently incarcerated at Union Correctional Institution in Florida.
But despite the continued attention surrounding his case, there is no confirmed execution date for Wilson at this time.
HIS LEGAL FIGHT IS STILL UNDERWAY
Wilson’s attorneys have been challenging his death sentences through the courts.
A major step came on February 5, 2026, when the Florida Supreme Court heard oral arguments concerning his death penalty challenge. Court records confirm that the case was scheduled for oral argument that morning.

WHY THE DEATH SENTENCE IS BEING CHALLENGED
Florida changed its death-penalty law in 2023, allowing a jury to recommend death without a unanimous vote, provided the required threshold is met.
Wilson’s case was tried under that legal framework.
His attorneys have argued that the application of the law raises constitutional questions. The Florida Supreme Court heard those arguments in February.
After the hearing, his legal team indicated that the case could continue through further appeals, including a possible petition to the U.S. Supreme Court.
THE 2019 MURDERS
Wilson was convicted in connection with the deaths of two women in Cape Coral in October 2019.
According to court proceedings and reporting on the case, Wilson met Kristine Melton at a Fort Myers bar before she was killed at her home.
Later that day, he encountered Diane Ruiz, who was walking to work. Prosecutors said Wilson persuaded her to enter his vehicle before killing her.
A Lee County jury found Wilson guilty of both murders in 2024.

That distinction is important.
