FAMILY SAYS GOODBYE TO LITTLE PETER MULCAIRE AFTER HEARTBREAKING TRAGEDY

A family in Rathkeale, Co. Limerick, has said a heartbreaking goodbye to two-year-old Peter Mulcaire, remembering him as a little boy whose smile could brighten an entire room.

Peter was described during his funeral Mass as his family’s “sunshine” and “pride.”

His parents, Kerrie and James, were joined by Peter’s older brother Jim and baby sister Delilah as they gathered to say goodbye to the little boy whose life had touched so many people in his short time with them.

“MOMMY’S SUNSHINE, DADDY’S PRIDE”

Peter had only recently started preschool.

His older brother Jim had walked him into his first class just days earlier, beginning what should have been a new adventure for the two-year-old.

At his funeral, a song written especially for Peter remembered him as “mommy’s sunshine, daddy’s pride, Jim’s best friend, and Delilah’s world.”

His favourite songs, You Are My Sunshine and Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, were played inside St Mary’s Church as family members and friends gathered to remember him.

Peter’s mother had often sung You Are My Sunshine to him.

Fr Eamonn Fitzgibbon told mourners that Peter’s smile could brighten any room and described him as a joyful, playful child who had quickly become part of the life of his new classroom.

A LITTLE BOY WHO LOVED ANIMALS

Peter was remembered as a child who loved animals.

His favourite book was Noah’s Ark, and his family said he adored his dogs and ponies.

During the funeral, members of his family placed personal items beside his coffin to represent the things that had brought Peter happiness.

His buggy was brought forward by his parents.

A bridle and rope represented his beloved ponies.

His grandmother brought a chocolate bar, while his older brother Jim carried Peter’s school bag.

Each item told a small part of the story of the little boy they loved.

HIS BABY SISTER WAS BAPTISED BESIDE HIM

One of the most poignant moments came when Peter’s baby sister, Delilah, was baptised during the funeral Mass.

Peter had been baptised at St Mary’s Church in April 2024.

For the family, having Delilah receive the same sacrament during Peter’s farewell allowed her brother to remain part of that important family moment.

She wore the same white baptismal shawl that Peter, Jim and their father had worn for their own baptisms.

A COMMUNITY SURROUNDED HIS FAMILY

The church was filled with reminders of Peter’s personality and the love surrounding him.

People wore pink shirts carrying his photograph and the words “Forever 2.”

Large floral tributes displayed photographs of Peter and his family.

People dressed as characters from some of his favourite shows and films, including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, PAW Patrol, Peppa Pig and Mario, also attended the service.

Outside, staff from Peter and Jim’s schools formed a guard of honour.

Peter was later taken to his final resting place at New Cemetery in Rathkeale, with a horse-drawn carriage led by four white horses.

“HE LEFT AN IMPRESSION ON EVERYONE HE MET”

The tragedy that took Peter from his family has left the Rathkeale community grieving.

Peter died after being struck by a vehicle near his home on September 5. Gardaí said the vehicle did not remain at the scene, and a man in his 30s was later arrested at another location on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant. He was subsequently released pending analysis of an evidential sample, and the investigation remains ongoing.

But at Peter’s funeral, the focus was not on the investigation.

It was on the little boy behind the headlines.

A child who had only just begun preschool.

A little brother.

A son.

A grandson.

A child who loved animals, music, colourful things and sitting on his father’s shoulders.

And a little boy whose family says he left an unforgettable impression on everyone he met.

Peter’s life was tragically short.

But for the people who loved him, his memory will last forever.
