FINDING A SMILE IN THE DARK: BROOKLINN KHOURY’S JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE
In November 2020, 20-year-old skateboarder and model Brooklinn Khoury faced a life-altering tragedy when a pit bull attack left her without her upper lip and part of her nose. Lying in a hospital bed, terrified and confused, Brooklinn searched the internet for anyone who had survived a similar facial injury to find hope. She found no one. In that quiet moment of isolation, she made a profound choice: she would document her story and become that beacon of hope for someone else.

Her path to recovery was long and painful. Reconstructive surgeon Dr. Nicholas Do at UCLA proposed a multi-stage plan starting with a complex 20-hour surgery, where tissue and blood vessels from her forearm were transplanted to build the foundation of a new lip. Over the next three years, through seven major operations, surgeons refined her nose, restored her breathing, and carefully reshaped her face.
Instead of hiding away until her surgeries were complete, Brooklinn chose absolute transparency. She shared every step of her journey on social media—from raw hospital updates and surgical scars to small victories like trying on lipstick again. She refused to hide the messiness of healing, wanting to ensure that no one else going through trauma would ever feel entirely alone.

By choosing vulnerability over silence, Brooklinn turned her personal tragedy into a source of comfort for thousands. Her journey proves that sharing the painful, unfinished steps of recovery can often offer far more strength to others than merely displaying a polished final result.
