TWO-YEAR-OLD PETER MULCAIRE REMEMBERED AS A RAY OF SUNSHINE BY HEARTBROKEN FAMILY

Two-year-old Peter Mulcaire had only just begun discovering the world around him.

He had recently started preschool, with his older brother Jim walking him into his first class for what his family hoped would be the beginning of a new adventure.

Instead, Peter’s family is now left holding onto the memories of a little boy whose smile, laughter and playful personality touched everyone around him.

Peter, from Rathkeale, County Limerick, was remembered during his funeral as his family’s “sunshine” and “pride.” His parents Kerrie and James, his brother Jim and baby sister Delilah are among those mourning the toddler’s sudden loss.

A LITTLE BOY WHO LOVED ANIMALS

At St Mary’s Church in Rathkeale, mourners heard how Peter was full of fun and mischief and loved chatting with people around him.

His favorite book was Noah’s Ark, reflecting his love of animals. He adored the family’s dogs — Fluffy, Rocky and Molly — as well as his ponies, Spot and Millie.

“He was a ray of sunshine,” Fr Eamonn Fitzgibbon told mourners, recalling Peter’s bright smile and lively personality.

Peter also loved rainbow colors and enjoyed sitting on his father’s shoulders.

His favorite songs included “You Are My Sunshine” and “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” Both songs were played during his funeral service.

Family members also brought objects that represented Peter’s short but cherished life.

His parents brought his buggy. A bridle and rope represented his love of his ponies, while his grandmother brought a chocolate bar and his brother Jim carried Peter’s school bag.

They were small reminders of the ordinary moments that had made Peter’s childhood so precious.

“FOREVER 2”

Peter’s funeral became a deeply personal tribute to the little boy his family loved so dearly.

Mourners wore pink shirts featuring Peter’s photograph and the words “Forever 2.” Heart-shaped floral arrangements displaying photographs of Peter and his family surrounded the church.

People also arrived dressed as characters from some of Peter’s favorite cartoons, including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Paw Patrol, Peppa Pig and Mario.

A special song written for Peter remembered him as his mother’s sunshine, his father’s pride, his brother Jim’s best friend and his baby sister Delilah’s world.

During the same service, baby Delilah was baptized.

She wore the white baptismal shawl that Peter, Jim and their father had worn for their own baptisms — allowing Peter’s memory to remain part of a milestone he should have been there to witness.

A COMMUNITY MOURNS

Peter’s death came after he was struck by a jeep near his home in Abbey Court, Rathkeale, shortly before 4 p.m. on September 5.

He was taken to University Hospital Limerick by a family member but was later pronounced dead.

Gardaí said the vehicle involved did not remain at the scene. A man in his 30s was later arrested at another location on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant. He was released pending analysis of an evidential blood or urine sample. The investigation remains ongoing.

The tragedy sent shockwaves through Rathkeale.

Peter had only recently started preschool, and staff from his school took part in a guard of honor outside St Mary’s Church for his funeral.

After the service, Peter’s casket was carried to a waiting hearse and horse-drawn carriage led by four white horses. Four Lamborghini cars accompanied the procession to New Cemetery in Rathkeale, where he was laid to rest.

For those who loved Peter, his story is not only about the heartbreaking circumstances that ended his life.

It is about a little boy who loved animals, treasured his family, enjoyed his favorite songs and brought happiness into the lives of the people around him.

Peter lived for only two years.

But in those two years, his family says, he left behind a lifetime of love — and memories they will carry with them forever.
