JUSTICE FOR GRAYSON WALTON: A COMMUNITY MOURNS A TRAGIC LOSS IN CLEATON

In Cleaton, Kentucky, an 11-month-old infant who should have been celebrating his upcoming first birthday was instead remembered by a grieving community following a horrific tragedy. Grayson Walton was just two weeks shy of reaching his milestone first birthday when authorities discovered his body concealed inside a couch on September 12.

According to official court records, Grayson had been left in the care of 19-year-old babysitter Elijah Mayes on September 11 while his father was at work. When the child went missing, Mayes allegedly claimed that a family friend had picked Grayson up. However, the individual denied taking the child. Investigators further allege that Mayes created a fraudulent phone number to send messages to himself in an effort to construct an alibi.

The following day, law enforcement located the infant’s body. Court documents cite that Grayson suffered visible physical injuries, including widespread bruising and apparent bite marks. Mayes was subsequently arrested and faces multiple charges, including murder, first-degree criminal abuse, tampering with physical evidence, abuse of a corpse, and methamphetamine possession. He has pleaded not guilty and remains held on a $1 million cash bond. A second individual, Jeff Barnett, was also charged with tampering with physical evidence, though specific allegations regarding his involvement have not been publicly detailed.

While official toxicology and autopsy reports remain pending, local residents recently gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor the young boy.
