AGAINST THE ODDS: TASMANIAN MUM WELCOMES RARE IDENTICAL TRIPLETS

A Tasmanian mother who was once warned that conceiving might be difficult has defied the medical odds by welcoming naturally conceived identical triplet girls. Keely Walsh, 33, and her partner Mat were astonished when an eight-week scan revealed three babies. A few weeks later, doctors confirmed that Aurora, Moana, and Niara were identical triplets sharing a single placenta while developing in separate sacs.

The news came as a profound surprise to Keely, who had previously been diagnosed with both endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Despite these challenges, she conceived naturally after just three months of trying. Because a monochorionic pregnancy carries high risks, Keely required intense weekly monitoring throughout her journey. At 32 weeks and two days, she went into labor and delivered the three girls via caesarean section at Royal Hobart Hospital.

Aurora was born first, followed shortly by Moana and Niara, with each baby weighing approximately 1.5 kilograms. The premature sisters spent five weeks in the neonatal unit before they were strong enough to finally head home.

Life at home with three newborns has since become a non-stop routine. Keely estimates that the family goes through around 252 bottles and 126 nappy changes every single week. Despite their nearly identical physical features, the girls are already beginning to show their own distinct personalities. Reflecting on their remarkable journey, Keely shared that after fearing she might never have even one child, holding three healthy daughters is more than she ever dared to dream.
