HER โ๐ก๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฎ๐ฃ๐ฒ๐ง๐ฎ๐ณ ๐ค๐ธ๐คโ LOOKED HARMLESS โ UNTIL NINE-MONTH-OLD NUALA WAS DIAGNOSED WITH RARE

When Megan first noticed that her nine-month-old daughter Nuala had a bloodshot eye, she never imagined it would be the first sign of a rare childhood cancer.
At first, the family thought Nuala may simply have rubbed her eye or burst a tiny blood vessel while crying. But when the redness failed to disappear, Megan took her to the GP.

Doctors initially believed it was a subconjunctival hemorrhage โ a usually harmless condition expected to clear within 7โ10 days.
But just days later, Megan noticed something else. Nualaโs left eye appeared to be protruding slightly.
Concerned, the family went to A&E. They were sent home with a routine ophthalmology referral, but Megan felt deep down that something was not right.
โI knew in my heart something wasnโt right, so I pushed for an earlier appointment,โ she recalled.

Two days later, Nuala was examined by a specialist. Further tests, including an ultrasound and MRI, were arranged.
As a nurse, Megan immediately understood that something serious might be happening when the hospital managed to arrange an urgent MRI within days.
โWhen radiology squeezed us into an urgent MRI slot, I knew it was serious,โ she said.
The scan revealed a tumour.

Doctors initially suspected rhabdomyosarcoma, but further testing eventually ruled that out. After eight long weeks of uncertainty, the family finally received the diagnosis: alveolar soft part sarcoma, an extremely rare form of cancer that is resistant to chemotherapy.
For Megan and her family, the news was devastating.
Doctors explained that the only option that could give Nuala the best chance of being cured was to remove her left eye.

โIt was the hardest decision weโve ever had to make,โ Megan shared. โBut we trusted the experts to do what was best for Nuala.โ
On December 11, shortly after celebrating her first birthday, little Nuala underwent the major surgery.
For a family who had begun their journey simply wondering why their babyโs eye was red, everything had changed in just a matter of months.
Yet throughout the uncertainty, tests and difficult decisions, Nuala continued to show remarkable strength.

โShe is our little fighter,โ her family said. โWe just want her to have the chance to grow up, smile, play and enjoy all the little things children should be able to enjoy.โ
Now, Nuala is beginning the next chapter of her recovery, surrounded by the love of her family.
Megan hopes that by sharing her daughterโs story, other parents will feel confident listening to their instincts when something about their child doesnโt seem right.

Nualaโs journey began with a seemingly harmless red eye. Today, her family hopes her story will help shine a light on a rare childhood cancer โ and remind others that sometimes, a parentโs instinct can be incredibly important.
