At 60, Cindy Crawford Faces the Unthinkable After Losing Her Son Presley
LOS ANGELES — For years, Cindy Crawford watched her son Presley Gerber speak publicly about struggles that were deeply personal to their family.
He talked about mental health. He acknowledged his battle with addiction. And through it all, his family remained close while he tried to find a way forward.
Now, at 60, Crawford is facing a loss no parent expects to endure.
Presley Gerber died Sept. 20 at the age of 27 while at a rehabilitation facility in Santa Monica, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. His official cause and manner of death have not been publicly determined.
The circumstances surrounding his final hours remain under investigation.
A Struggle Presley Chose to Talk About
Presley did not completely hide his difficulties from the public.
In recent years, he used his social-media platform to discuss mental health and encourage conversations about problems people often keep private. He created a recurring series called “Mental Health Mondays,” using his own experiences to connect with others facing similar struggles.
His sister, Kaia Gerber, also spoke publicly about how her brother’s struggles affected the entire family.
In an interview published shortly before his death, Kaia described the experience of growing up with a sibling who needed significant support and explained how it shaped her own approach to asking for help.
Presley’s willingness to speak openly about his difficulties became part of his public identity.
But for Crawford, he was never simply a public figure or a troubled young man.
He was her son.
Cindy Crawford’s Final Public Words to Presley
Just two months before his death, Crawford marked Presley’s 27th birthday with a deeply personal tribute.
She shared childhood photographs alongside a more recent image and wrote that she was proud of the man he had become, while still seeing him as her little boy.
Those words now carry a different weight.
They offer a glimpse of the relationship between a mother and her adult son at a time when Presley was still trying to build a life of his own.
Crawford had also recently spoken about the transition of parenting adult children.
In an interview published days before Presley’s death, she discussed becoming an empty nester and the difficult process of learning to step back as children grow older.
Her comments reflected a reality familiar to many parents: loving an adult child does not mean being able to control every decision they make.
His Final Hours Are Now Under Investigation
Presley entered a Santa Monica rehabilitation facility shortly before his death.
According to the Los Angeles Times, police responded to the facility after receiving reports involving a cardiac arrest and a possible overdose. He was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m. on Sept. 20. Police said there was no indication of foul play at the time.
The medical examiner later completed an autopsy but deferred determining the cause and manner of death, saying additional testing or studies were needed.
That means an overdose remains part of the investigation, but it has not been established as the official cause of death.
That distinction is important.
The unanswered questions surrounding Presley’s death have also brought renewed attention to his history of addiction and his decision to seek treatment.
New Video Adds to the Timeline
TMZ later published video it said was recorded by Presley inside the sober-living facility on the night before his death.
According to TMZ, the footage was recorded around 10 p.m. Saturday and shows Presley moving through parts of the residence. Sources cited by the outlet alleged that he appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
Those claims have not established what ultimately caused his death.
But the footage provides another piece of the timeline investigators may consider as they reconstruct what happened between his arrival at the facility and the discovery of his body the following morning.
A Family Left With Questions
For Crawford and her family, the investigation is unfolding alongside an unimaginable loss.
The family has publicly asked for privacy rather than offering a detailed account of Presley’s final days.
That request has remained consistent since news of his death became public.
Presley’s story is therefore not simply about the death of a celebrity’s son.
It is also about a young man who openly acknowledged that he was struggling, sought help, and tried to use his experiences to encourage other people to talk about their own mental-health battles.
And it is about a mother who, despite having fame, wealth and access to resources, could not control every part of her adult son’s journey.
At 60, Cindy Crawford is now grieving the child she once carried, raised and watched grow into a 27-year-old man.
The final answers about what happened to Presley Gerber may still be months away.
For his family, however, the loss is already permanent.
