A NEW BEGINNING: THE REMARKABLE HEALING STORY OF GRACE
For nearly nine years, a jaw tumor grew relentlessly on seven-year-old Grace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. By 2013, the 17-year-old was living with a 2.2-kilogram mass that severely distorted her face, blocked her mouth, and threatened her life. Eating, speaking, and walking in public without staring eyes had become painful struggles.

Her turning point arrived when Pastor Gregoire photographed her condition and shared it online, ultimately connecting her with Mercy Ships. Grace and the pastor traveled to Pointe-Noire, Republic of the Congo, to board the hospital ship Africa Mercy. Utilizing a newly installed CT scanner, the medical team carefully mapped the complex tumor.
On September 10, 2013, surgeons successfully removed the massive growth. A week later, Grace underwent a second major procedure to reconstruct her jaw using a prosthesis. Over seven months aboard the ship, she endured three surgeries and recovered at the HOPE Center alongside her mother, Christine. Beyond the physical transformation, Grace rediscovered simple joys: smiling, eating, communicating freely, walking untroubled, and enjoying competitive games of UNO and Jenga.

Contrary to online rumors labeling the growth as cancer, medical documentation confirms it was a benign jaw tumor. After months of comprehensive care, Grace left the Africa Mercy in March 2014 with renewed hope, planning to return to school and pursue a career in nursing. Specialist medical care did more than remove a physical burden—it restored her dignity and gave her back the promise of an ordinary future.
