THE VOICE UK HITS A NEW LOW — VIEWERS TUNE OUT AS TOM JONES ERA COMES TO AN END

The latest episode reportedly attracted around 1.5 million viewers as ITV prepares for one of the biggest shake-ups in the show’s history

The Voice UK appears to be entering a very different era.

The latest episode attracted around 1.5 million viewers, according to overnight ratings reported by Broadcast, putting the ITV singing competition at another low point in its current run.

The disappointing figure comes as the programme prepares for a major overhaul — and just weeks after the departure of one of its most recognisable faces, Sir Tom Jones.

For longtime viewers, the timing has raised an obvious question:

Has The Voice UK changed too much, too quickly?

The Voice UK has traditionally been one of ITV’s major Saturday-night entertainment programmes.

But its recent overnight figures have been under pressure.

On September 5, the programme attracted around 1.9 million viewers, while the September 12 episode rose to approximately 2.2 million. By September 19, however, the overnight audience had fallen to around 1.6 million, described by ratings reports as the show’s lowest overnight figure at that point.

The latest reported figure of around 1.5 million on October 3 therefore continues the downward trend in overnight viewing.

However, overnight figures do not represent a show’s complete audience. Catch-up and ITVX viewing can add substantially to a programme’s final consolidated total.

The ratings story arrives shortly after Sir Tom Jones confirmed that he would not return for the next series.

The legendary Welsh singer made clear that leaving was not his decision, saying he did not want to leave the programme.

His departure marked the end of a long-running relationship with The Voice UK and removed one of the show’s most familiar personalities from the coaching panel.

For many viewers, Tom was more than simply another coach.

His distinctive personality, decades of musical experience and long association with the programme had made him one of the faces most closely identified with The Voice UK.

ITV IS COMPLETELY CHANGING THE LINE-UP

The changes go much further than Tom Jones.

ITV has confirmed that Series 15, scheduled for 2027, will feature a new coaching line-up consisting of Cheryl, Aitch, Kelly Rowland and will.i.am.

Cheryl and Aitch will make their coaching debuts, while Kelly Rowland returns for a second series. will.i.am remains the show’s longest-serving coach.

There will also be a new presenting team.

Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon will take over hosting duties from Emma Willis. ITV has also confirmed that Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones will leave the coaching panel.

In other words, next year’s show will look dramatically different from the version viewers have become accustomed to.

THE TIMING HAS VIEWERS TALKING

The latest ratings have inevitably added fuel to the debate surrounding ITV’s decision to rebuild the programme.

A drop in overnight viewing does not by itself establish why audiences are tuning out. Scheduling, competition from other channels, changing television habits and the availability of streaming can all affect overnight numbers.

The Voice UK’s recent episodes have also faced strong competition from Strictly Come Dancing, which attracted more than five million viewers on September 19.

So while the ratings make for a striking headline, they do not provide a simple explanation for the show’s performance.

Still, the timing is difficult to ignore.

The programme is losing several familiar faces at the same time that ITV is introducing a completely new coaching dynamic.

CAN THE NEW ERA BRING VIEWERS BACK?

ITV clearly believes the answer lies in reinvention.

The broadcaster has described Cheryl and Aitch as major new additions and says the new line-up will bring fresh energy to the famous red chairs.

Kelly Rowland’s return also provides continuity, while will.i.am remains as a link to previous seasons.

But whether longtime viewers will embrace the new combination remains to be seen.

For some fans, a changing panel can keep a long-running talent show feeling fresh.

For others, the chemistry between familiar coaches is part of what makes the programme worth watching.

And with Tom Jones now gone, that chemistry will inevitably feel different.

THE VOICE UK’S NEXT CHAPTER

The current series is still continuing, meaning ITV has time to see how the audience responds before the new era officially begins.

But the latest overnight figure of around 1.5 million provides another talking point for a programme undergoing one of its biggest transformations yet.

Tom Jones is gone.

Emma Willis is leaving.

Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones are departing.

And in 2027, Cheryl, Aitch, Kelly Rowland and will.i.am will sit in the red chairs, with Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon taking over as hosts.

The question now isn’t simply whether The Voice UK can discover its next great singer.

It’s whether the show’s new generation can convince viewers to keep turning their chairs — and their televisions — back toward ITV.
