ROYAL FAMILY DOCTOR FOUND DEAD DURING CHILDREN’S SLEEPOVER — HUSBAND CHARGED WITH MURDER
Dr. Hannah Cain, known professionally as Hannah Terry, was found unconscious at her Norfolk home near the King’s Sandringham estate. Her husband has been charged in connection with her death.
A respected GP who was part of a medical team serving members of the British royal family has died after being found unconscious at her home near King Charles and Queen Camilla’s Sandringham estate.
Dr. Hannah Cain, 45, known professionally as Dr. Hannah Terry, was found at a property on Fern Hill in Dersingham, Norfolk, during the early hours of Sunday, October 4.
Her husband, Mark Cain, 45, has since been charged with her murder and remains in custody.
The case has shocked the local community and devastated the family of a doctor remembered by colleagues as warm, caring and deeply committed to her patients.
A TRAGIC NIGHT AT THE FAMILY HOME
According to evidence presented in court, emergency services contacted police at around 2:25 a.m. on October 4.
Prosecutor Jackie Hanlon told Norwich Magistrates’ Court that Hannah was found in an upstairs bedroom not breathing and not conscious.
Paramedics attended the property before police became involved.
The home is in Dersingham, a village located just over a mile from Sandringham House, the Norfolk country residence of the King and Queen.
The tragedy reportedly occurred while Hannah was hosting a sleepover for her children and their friends.
Prosecutors confirmed that children were present in the property at the time.
COURT HEARS ABOUT HEAD AND NECK INJURIES
At Wednesday’s hearing, the court was told that a post-mortem examination had identified a blunt-force injury to the right side of Hannah’s head.
The prosecutor also said there was an injury that could be suggestive of compression of the neck.
Earlier, Norfolk Police had said the cause of death was still pending further investigation.
The evidence presented in court therefore represents what prosecutors said had been identified during the examination, rather than a final determination of the circumstances surrounding Hannah’s death.
HER HUSBAND HAS BEEN CHARGED
Mark Cain, also of Fern Hill, was arrested following the discovery of Hannah’s body.
He was subsequently charged with her murder by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Cain appeared before Norwich Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, October 7.
During the brief hearing, he spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth. He was not asked to enter a plea.
He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at King’s Lynn Crown Court on October 8.
The Crown Prosecution Service has stressed that being charged is not a finding of guilt and that the defendant has the right to a fair trial.
A DOCTOR WHO CARED FOR ROYAL PATIENTS
Hannah worked as a GP at Grimston Medical Centre and had been a qualified doctor for more than 15 years, with around eight years working as a GP.
She was also part of a pool of doctors who were regularly available to members of the royal family in the Sandringham area.
Reports have said that her patients included senior members of the Royal Family, including Queen Camilla.
The medical centre is only a few miles from Sandringham and has previously provided healthcare services to members of the royal household.
King Charles and Queen Camilla have reportedly been informed of Hannah’s death.
“KIND, GENEROUS AND LOVING”
As news of Hannah’s death spread, tributes began appearing outside Grimston Medical Centre.
Patients left flowers, cards and a teddy bear in memory of the doctor.
Her colleagues remembered her not simply as a physician, but as someone who cared deeply about the people she treated.
The Norfolk and Waveney Local Medical Committee described her as a wonderful GP who was dedicated to providing excellent care for her patients.
Her family later released a heartbreaking statement.
They said they were “devastated by the loss of our beautiful Hannah”, describing her as kind, generous and loving and saying she was a beloved mother, daughter, sister, aunt, daughter-in-law and friend.
They also expressed pride in the care she provided to her patients and asked the public to respect their privacy as they grieve.
A MOTHER OF THREE
Away from her medical career, Hannah was a mother to three sons.
Reports say the boys were born in 2013, 2015 and 2018.
Her family life was at the centre of the tragic night, with the children and their friends reportedly staying at the home for the sleepover.
The details surrounding what happened inside the property remain part of the investigation.
Police have not publicly established a motive.
A COMMUNITY IN SHOCK
Dersingham is a relatively quiet village close to the Sandringham estate, making the circumstances surrounding Hannah’s death particularly shocking for residents.
Friends, neighbours, patients and medical colleagues have described her as warm, compassionate and devoted to her family.
The Grimston Medical Centre was temporarily closed following the tragedy because of the impact on its staff.
It has since reopened, although the practice has said it will not comment on the circumstances surrounding Hannah’s death.
THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
Norfolk Police and the Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team remain responsible for investigating the circumstances surrounding Hannah’s death.
Detective Inspector Alix Wright said investigators were still in the very early stages of establishing exactly what happened.
Specialist officers are also supporting Hannah’s family.
Police have urged anyone who may have information relevant to the investigation to come forward.
For the people who knew Dr. Hannah Terry, however, the case is about far more than the circumstances now being examined by investigators.
She was a doctor who cared for her patients.
A mother of three.
A wife, daughter, sister and friend.
And a woman remembered by those closest to her as kind, generous and loving.
As the legal process begins and investigators continue searching for answers, her family is now facing the devastating loss of a woman whose life was defined by the people she cared for — both at home and in her medical practice.
Hannah was 45 years old. She was a doctor, a mother and a deeply loved member of her family and community.
