“HE WAS ONLY 12…” — RAMI FOUND DEAD AFTER 11 DAYS AS A DESPERATE SEARCH ENDS IN HEARTBREAK

The autistic boy disappeared during severe storms near Barcelona. After days of searching rivers, flooded areas and surrounding communities, his family received the devastating news they had feared.

The desperate search for 12-year-old Rami has ended in tragedy after his body was found in the sea off the coast of Catalonia, Spain.

Rami, a boy with autism who was described in missing-person appeals as particularly vulnerable, disappeared from his home in Granollers during the early hours of October 4, as torrential rain and severe storms swept through northeastern Spain.

For 11 days, his disappearance prompted an extensive search involving emergency responders, specialist rescue teams and volunteers. His family held on to hope as authorities searched waterways and surrounding areas for any sign of the missing child.

That hope was shattered when a fisherman discovered a body floating in the water near Les Botigues Beach, close to Sitges, on Wednesday afternoon, October 14.

Authorities subsequently confirmed the body was Rami’s through fingerprint identification, according to reports published on Thursday.

A NIGHT OF FEAR AND SEVERE WEATHER

Reports said Rami left home after becoming frightened by the storm. The heavy rainfall had caused flooding and disruption across parts of Catalonia, creating dangerous conditions throughout the region.

His disappearance immediately raised concerns because of his autism and the additional vulnerabilities described in the public appeal for help finding him.

His mother, Faouzia Benouizi, spent days waiting for news of her son. As the search continued, relatives and volunteers appealed for information and urged people to remain alert for possible sightings.

Every new lead brought the possibility of an answer. But as the days passed without confirmation of his whereabouts, the family’s anguish deepened.

AN EXTENSIVE SEARCH ACROSS LAND AND WATER

Emergency services concentrated their efforts on waterways and areas around Granollers, including sections of the Besòs River and nearby streams.

Firefighters, police officers, specialist rescue units and volunteers took part in the operation. Search teams used drones, helicopters, rescue dogs and underwater specialists to examine areas that might hold clues to Rami’s disappearance.

As the initial searches produced no confirmed location, the operation expanded farther from the area where he was last seen.

The discovery near Sitges brought the search to a heartbreaking conclusion.

Authorities have not publicly established every detail of what happened after Rami left home, and the circumstances of his death remain a matter for investigators.

A FAMILY LEFT WITH UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

Catalan regional president Salvador Illa expressed his condolences to Rami’s family and thanked the emergency teams who had worked tirelessly during the search.

His message reflected the sorrow felt across the region following the discovery.

For Rami’s loved ones, however, the loss is profoundly personal. They had spent days hoping he would be found alive and returned home safely.

Now, instead of the reunion they prayed for, they must face the devastating reality of losing a child.

Rami’s story has also drawn attention to the additional risks that children with communication and sensory differences may face when frightened or separated from familiar surroundings.

But beyond the circumstances of his disappearance, he was a 12-year-old boy whose life mattered deeply to his family.

Rest in peace, Rami. May your family find strength and comfort during this heartbreaking time. 🤍
