HEARTBREAKING TIGER ATT@CK INQUEST: WILLIAM CHAPMAN’S FAMILY RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT HIS FINAL DAYS

HEARTBREAKING TIGER ATTACK INQUEST: WILLIAM CHAPMAN’S FAMILY RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT HIS FINAL DAYS
The family of 24-year-old William Chapman has raised concerns about his contact with mental health services before his death at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. As an inquest examines the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, questions remain about the support he received and what led to the fatal encounter.
The family of William Chapman is facing an unimaginable loss after the 24-year-old died following an encounter with a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, England.
At the opening of the inquest on October 15, the hearing was told that Chapman had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had experienced episodes of psychosis. His family had also expressed concerns about his contact with mental health services before his death.
The hearing marked an important first step in examining the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, while leaving many questions for further investigation.
WHAT HAPPENED AT YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK?
Chapman visited the wildlife park on October 10, 2026. According to evidence presented at the inquest, he climbed over two fences and entered the enclosure occupied by a male Amur tiger named Altai.
The coroner’s officer told the hearing that the tiger approached Chapman and that the ensuing physical encounter caused multiple traumatic injuries. Emergency services attended, but Chapman was pronounced dead at the scene.
An initial post-mortem examination provisionally recorded multiple traumatic injuries as the cause of death. Further evidence is expected to be considered as the inquest continues.
QUESTIONS ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
During the opening hearing at Doncaster Coroner’s Court, the family’s concerns about Chapman’s contact with mental health services were brought to the attention of the coroner.
The hearing was told that Chapman had been under adult mental health services in Doncaster, although he was described as highly functioning and independent, with no care requirements.
His family had previously said he had experienced significant mental illness over a number of years and had been prescribed strong medication.
They have asked the relevant authorities to establish what happened in the period leading up to his death. The full circumstances—and whether any shortcomings in care contributed to events—have not been established.
The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust has launched an independent patient-safety investigation into the circumstances surrounding the case.
A FAMILY REMEMBERS A MUCH-LOVED SON
Beyond the details presented in court, William’s family wants him to be remembered as a person, not simply for the tragic circumstances of his death.
In a statement, they described him as a “bright, warm and engaging young man” who was deeply loved by his family and loved them in return.
Chapman had appeared in television productions as a child and attended the Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe. The school also paid tribute to its former student following news of his death.
His loved ones have asked the public to respect their privacy as they try to come to terms with the loss.
They have also expressed distress over the circulation of graphic footage of the incident, asking people not to share material that adds to the family’s suffering.
INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE
The inquest is not the only investigation underway. The City of Doncaster Council, which licenses Yorkshire Wildlife Park, has launched a health and safety investigation into the incident.
The wildlife park has said it is cooperating with the relevant authorities. It has also confirmed that Altai remains alive and will not be euthanised as a result of the incident.
The full inquest is scheduled to resume on March 18, 2027, when further evidence may help clarify the circumstances surrounding Chapman’s death.
For now, the family’s concerns about mental health support remain matters for investigation, not established findings of wrongdoing.
QUESTIONS THAT REMAIN
William Chapman’s death has left his family grieving and raised difficult questions about mental health care, public safety and the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter.
The ongoing investigations will need to establish the relevant facts before conclusions can be drawn.
For his loved ones, however, the loss is already devastating. Their hope is that the process will bring greater understanding of what happened while protecting William’s memory from being reduced to the final moments of his life.
William was a son, a loved one and a young man with a life beyond this tragedy. His family is asking for compassion, privacy and answers as the investigations continue.
