BREAKING: TWO TOP BARRISTERS APPOINTED TO PROSECUTE MARK CAIN IN DR HANNAH TERRY CASE — NEW PHASE BEGINS
The prosecution team has been confirmed in the case involving the death of Norfolk GP Dr Hannah Cain, professionally known as Dr Hannah Terry. Her husband, Mark Cain, remains in custody as the legal proceedings move forward.
A significant development has emerged in the case of Dr Hannah Cain, the 45-year-old general practitioner whose death at her home in Dersingham, Norfolk, has shocked her local community.
On October 14, Red Lion Chambers confirmed that Christopher Paxton KC and Steven Ball had been instructed by the Crown Prosecution Service for the prosecution of Mark Cain, who has been charged with his wife’s murder.
The appointment marks another step in the legal process as the case continues through the courts. However, the allegations against Mark Cain have yet to be tested at trial, and he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence.
TWO EXPERIENCED PROSECUTORS APPOINTED
Christopher Paxton KC and Steven Ball both have experience handling serious criminal cases.
Paxton has worked on complex criminal proceedings, including homicide cases, while Ball has experience prosecuting and defending in serious criminal matters.
Steven Ball also appeared for the prosecution at an earlier Crown Court hearing in the case.
Their appointment comes as prosecutors prepare to present the case against Mark Cain during the forthcoming proceedings.
WHAT THE COURT HAS HEARD SO FAR
Dr Hannah Cain was found unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom at the couple’s home on Fern Hill in Dersingham during the early hours of October 4, 2026.
Emergency services attended, and police subsequently launched an investigation into her death.
A post-mortem examination recorded blunt-force injuries to her head and neck injuries described in court as consistent with compression of the neck.
At an earlier hearing, the court heard the prosecution’s allegations concerning the circumstances surrounding her death. These remain allegations and must be considered through the criminal justice process.
MARK CAIN REMAINS IN CUSTODY
Mark Cain, 45, was charged with murder on October 6 and appeared before magistrates the following day.
He subsequently appeared at King’s Lynn Crown Court by video link from prison. He was remanded in custody pending further proceedings and was not asked to enter a plea at that hearing.
A plea hearing was provisionally scheduled for December 3 at Norwich Crown Court. A trial date had not been set in the reports available at the time of the latest update.
REMEMBERING DR HANNAH CAIN
Known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry, Hannah worked as a GP at a medical centre near Dersingham and also ran a cosmetics business.
Her family described her as “kind, generous and loving” and praised the care she gave to her patients.
The death has deeply affected those who knew her, both personally and professionally. Specialist officers are supporting her family, who have asked for privacy as they grieve.
THE NEXT STAGE OF THE CASE
With the prosecution team now confirmed, attention will turn to the next court hearings and the evidence presented as the case progresses.
The appointment of experienced barristers does not determine the outcome. That decision will depend on the evidence and the judicial process.
For now, Mark Cain remains charged with murder, and the proceedings are ongoing.
As the legal process continues, the focus remains on establishing the facts while respecting the right to a fair trial.
