HE WAS HOLDING UP HIS CATCH FOR A PHOTO — THEN A 12-FOOT ALLIGATOR DRAGGED HIM INTO THE WATER

Steven Hamilton, 71, was enjoying a fishing trip in Florida when a routine moment by the water turned into a fatal encounter. Witnesses say the alligator struck just as he was showing off the fish he had caught.

WINTER GARDEN, FLORIDA — What began as an ordinary evening of fishing ended in tragedy for 71-year-old Steven Hamilton, a local musician whose life was cut short in a sudden alligator attack.

Hamilton was fishing on October 16 at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park near Lake Apopka, northwest of Orlando, when the nearly 12-foot reptile reportedly emerged from the water and pulled him from the shoreline.

According to witness accounts reported by local media, Hamilton had just caught a bass and was holding it up for a photograph when the alligator suddenly grabbed his leg.

“He caught a bass. He held it up for whoever it was to take a picture of him, and the gator came up and grabbed him by the leg and pulled him in,” witness Beatrice Soto told WFTV.

In a matter of moments, the peaceful fishing trip became a desperate emergency.

Hamilton was pulled beneath the water and did not return to the surface. Emergency crews were called to the scene at around 5 p.m., but rescuers faced a dangerous obstacle: other alligators were also active in the water, making it difficult to reach him safely.

His body was recovered at approximately 7 p.m., according to local officials cited by news outlets.

The tragedy has left the local community grieving and raised renewed concerns about the risks of fishing near waters where alligators are known to live.

Hamilton was known not only for his love of fishing but also for his connection to the local music community.

He had reportedly spent years performing with the Bone Brothers Band, and friends and fellow musicians remembered him as someone whose presence would be deeply missed.

Connor Kelly, who had occasionally fished alongside Hamilton, described his reaction to hearing the news as immediate heartbreak.

The loss has been particularly difficult for those who knew Hamilton as a familiar face around the local fishing spots. For them, the place where he once spent peaceful hours outdoors has become the scene of an unimaginable loss.

Following the incident, wildlife authorities worked with a contracted nuisance-alligator trapper to locate and remove the animal believed to be responsible.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed that an alligator measuring 11 feet, 8 inches was removed from the area and euthanized.

Authorities have emphasized that serious injuries caused by alligators are rare in Florida, even though the reptiles inhabit lakes, ponds, rivers and wetlands throughout the state.

Officials also reminded the public to remain alert near the water and maintain a safe distance from wild animals.

Hamilton’s death was the second fatal alligator attack reported in Florida in 2026, following the death of 31-year-old Brittany Clark in June.

According to the Associated Press, the two fatalities brought the number of people killed in alligator attacks in Florida since 1948 to 34, based on state data.

A MOMENT THAT TURNED INTO A FINAL MEMORY

For Hamilton, the fishing trip had appeared to be a familiar, enjoyable part of life. He had caught a fish and was preparing for a photograph — an everyday moment that no one present could have expected to become so devastating.

Now, the incident serves as a sobering reminder that even familiar outdoor locations can carry risks when people are close to wildlife.

Florida officials advise people never to feed alligators, to keep their distance when one is spotted and to swim only in designated areas during daylight hours.

For those who knew Steven Hamilton, however, the safety warnings cannot ease the grief of losing someone they cared about.

A fishing trip that began with a catch ended with a community mourning a man whose life, friendships and music will be remembered long after that terrible evening.
