BOY, 12, SAVES HIS UNCONSCIOUS MUM AT 60MPH — NOW ZAC IS BEING HONOURED AS A TRUE HERO
UNITED KINGDOM — A 12-year-old boy has been hailed a hero after taking extraordinary action to save his unconscious mother when their car suddenly became dangerously out of control on a busy dual carriageway.
Zac was travelling in the passenger seat with his mum, Nicola, on their way to a Christmas market when an ordinary journey turned into a terrifying fight for survival.
As the car travelled at approximately 60mph, Nicola suddenly became seriously unwell and lost consciousness at the wheel.
With no adult able to control the vehicle, Zac realised that he had only moments to act.
His quick thinking, courage and determination helped bring the car to a halt — and may have saved both their lives.
A TERRIFYING MOMENT ON THE A40
Nicola had been driving along the A40 when she began feeling unwell. She managed to steer the car partly off the road before losing consciousness completely.
But the danger was far from over.
The vehicle was an automatic, and with Nicola’s foot jammed down on the accelerator, the car remained in motion and began veering back towards the dual carriageway.
Zac looked across at his mum and realised she was unconscious.
The car was moving dangerously fast, and there was little time to think. A collision with a tree or the possibility of the vehicle leaving the road could have had devastating consequences.
For a boy of just 12, the situation was almost unimaginable.
Yet Zac understood that he had to do something immediately.
THE SPLIT-SECOND DECISION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Leaning across from the passenger seat, Zac reached for the steering wheel and guided the car towards the central reservation.
The vehicle scraped and bumped along the barrier before finally coming to a stop.
It was a frightening manoeuvre, but it brought the car to a halt and prevented the uncontrolled vehicle from continuing along the road.
Zac then turned off the engine and called 999.
Even after surviving the terrifying ordeal, he still had more to do.
Using the car’s satellite navigation system, he identified their precise location and relayed the information to emergency call handlers, helping police and paramedics find them quickly.
During the call, Zac could be heard reassuring his mum while waiting for help to arrive.
His actions showed remarkable composure in circumstances that would have overwhelmed many adults.
NICOLA SPENT MINUTES UNCONSCIOUS
Nicola remained unconscious for approximately seven minutes because of extremely low blood pressure.
She was subsequently taken to hospital for medical assessment and treatment.
Although she survived the incident, the experience left the family facing an anxious period of recovery and further medical investigations.
Nicola has been awaiting additional cardiology tests and has been unable to return to driving while her health is assessed.
For a mother, discovering that her young son had been forced to take control during such a dangerous emergency must have been an emotional experience.
The journey that began as a trip to enjoy a Christmas market became a moment neither of them would ever forget.
🏆 FROM A FRIGHTENED PASSENGER TO A CHILD OF COURAGE
Zac’s bravery has since earned him national recognition.
Now 13, he is set to receive the Child of Courage Award at the Pride of Britain Awards in London.
The honour recognises children who have demonstrated exceptional bravery, resilience or selflessness in extraordinary circumstances.
Zac’s story stands out because he was not a trained driver or an emergency responder. He was a child who suddenly found himself responsible for helping save his mother’s life.
Faced with a terrifying situation, he acted quickly, sought help and remained focused on getting emergency services to the scene.
His courage has inspired admiration from people across the country.
A MOTHER AND SON WHO WILL NEVER FORGET THAT DAY
For Nicola and Zac, the incident is a powerful reminder of how quickly an ordinary day can change.
What began as a family outing could have ended in tragedy. Instead, Zac’s quick thinking gave emergency responders the opportunity to reach them after the vehicle had stopped.
His actions cannot erase the fear of those moments, but they have given the family something extraordinary to be grateful for: the chance to move forward together.
The Pride of Britain award will recognise Zac’s courage, but the significance of what he did goes far beyond a trophy or a ceremony.
He saw someone he loved in danger and did everything he could to help her.
At just 12 years old, Zac faced a life-threatening emergency and acted with remarkable courage. His story is a reminder that bravery is not about being fearless — it is about finding the strength to act when someone needs you most.
Congratulations, Zac. Your courage has made your mum proud, and your story deserves to be celebrated.
