“A BRIGHT, WARM AND ENGAGING SON”: WILLIAM CHAPMAN’S FAMILY SPEAKS OUT AFTER FATAL TIGER INCIDENT
The family of former child actor William Chapman is asking the public to remember the young man they loved, rather than repeatedly sharing distressing footage of his final moments.
The family of William Chapman, a 24-year-old former child actor who died after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in England, has spoken of its devastating loss and appealed for compassion as investigations continue.
William died on October 10, 2026, after entering the enclosure of an Amur tiger named Altai at the wildlife park near Doncaster. Emergency services attended, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a heartfelt statement released several days later, his family described him as “a bright, warm and engaging young man whom his family dearly loved — and William loved them back.”
Their words offered a deeply personal reminder that behind the headlines was a son whose life, relationships and experiences extended far beyond the circumstances of his death.
HIS FAMILY’S PLEA: PLEASE STOP SHARING THE FOOTAGE
As videos and images of the incident spread across social media, William’s relatives said the circulation of distressing material was causing them severe emotional pain at an exceptionally vulnerable time.
“The family are utterly devastated by their loss and are struggling to come to terms with what has happened,” their statement said.
They asked the public to stop sharing the footage and to respect their privacy while they grieve.
The family also expressed hope that the relevant authorities would establish what led William to enter the enclosure.
Their appeal has drawn attention to the impact that viral content can have on bereaved relatives, particularly when images of a loved one’s final moments are repeatedly circulated without their consent.
A YOUNG MAN WITH A HISTORY IN TELEVISION
William had appeared in television productions as a child, including ITV’s comedy drama May Contain Nuts and the BBC series True Stories, in which he portrayed Edward Jenner.
He had attended the Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe, where his former school community also paid tribute to him.
The school said it was deeply saddened by his death and remembered watching him grow as both a person and a performer.
For those who knew him, William was more than the person at the centre of an internationally reported tragedy. He was a family member, a former student and a young man with his own interests, experiences and future.
WHAT THE INQUEST HEARD
An inquest into William’s death opened at Doncaster Coroner’s Court on October 15.
The hearing was told that he had climbed two fences to enter the tiger enclosure. Senior coroner Nicola Mundy heard that William had a history of mental illness, had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had experienced previous episodes of psychosis.
His family had raised concerns about his contact with mental health services, and an investigation into his care was reported to be under way.
The inquest heard that William died from “multiple traumatic injuries and animal interaction.” Proceedings were adjourned until March 18, 2027, while further inquiries continue.
His family had specifically asked that the coroner be allowed to determine what role, if any, his mental health and medication played in the circumstances leading to his death. It would be inappropriate to reach conclusions beyond the evidence presented through the formal process.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE TIGER?
The Amur tiger involved in the incident, Altai, remained at the park following the tragedy. Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed that the animal would not be euthanised as a result of the incident.
The park also said it was cooperating with South Yorkshire Police and other relevant agencies. A separate health and safety investigation was launched by City of Doncaster Council.
The incident prompted widespread public attention and renewed discussion about enclosure security, visitor safety and the protection of wildlife.
However, the full circumstances remain a matter for the relevant investigations, and speculation online cannot replace their findings.
REMEMBERING WILLIAM BEYOND THE HEADLINES
William’s death has left his family facing an unimaginable loss. Their message is not simply a tribute to a loved one, but a request for people to show restraint and compassion during a painful period.
They want William to be remembered for the person he was: a young man who was loved by his family and whose life included experiences and relationships that cannot be captured in a viral video.
As the investigation continues, their plea remains clear: respect the grieving family, avoid circulating distressing footage and allow the official process to establish the facts.
May William Chapman be remembered with dignity, and may his family find strength and comfort in the difficult days ahead.
