McPHERSON, KANSAS — A grieving Kansas community came together Monday, October 26, to say goodbye to 6-year-old Cole Adrian, remembering a young boy whose life was tragically cut short in a devastating crash at Wichita’s Stryker Sports Complex.

Cole’s funeral was held at the Free Methodist Church of McPherson, where family members, friends, schoolmates and other community members gathered to honor his memory and support his loved ones. A private graveside service followed.

The service offered an opportunity for those who knew Cole to celebrate his young life while coming to terms with a loss that has deeply affected families throughout the community.

Cole Adrian, just 6 years old, arrived at his brother's soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, expecting a regular outing. However, one tragic moment forever altered that day.💔A LITTLE BOY REMEMBERED FOR THE THINGS HE LOVED

Cole was a kindergarten student at Roosevelt Elementary School in McPherson. His family invited funeral attendees to wear soccer jerseys, blue clothing or camouflage — some of the things the little boy loved — as a personal tribute.

The request allowed mourners to honor Cole through the colors, clothing and activities that reflected his personality and interests.

His school community also came together to remember him. McPherson Public Schools closed on Monday so students and staff could attend the funeral and pay their respects.

The loss of a young student has left classmates, educators and families navigating an especially difficult period of grief.

Cole died on October 17 when a pickup truck drove onto a soccer field at Stryker Sports Complex in northeast Wichita while games were taking place.

According to the Wichita Police Department, the crash claimed two lives: Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, both residents of McPherson. The two victims were not related.

Ten other people, ranging in age from 5 to 68, were injured and transported to area hospitals.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicated that a Chevrolet pickup had been parked near the soccer fields before entering a playing area and striking multiple people.

The incident transformed what had been a day of youth sports into a scene of tragedy, affecting families, players, witnesses and first responders.

INVESTIGATION REMAINS ONGOING

Authorities have continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

In an update issued October 20, the Wichita Police Department said detectives had conducted nearly 50 interviews and were examining vehicle evidence and available data. Investigators were also awaiting official toxicology results and working with forensic specialists.

The 34-year-old driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated with officers, was released after investigators consulted with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office. Police said they did not then have probable cause to make an arrest. No charges had been filed in the department’s published update.

Officials emphasized that the investigation remained active and that the driver’s release did not represent a final determination about whether criminal charges would be appropriate.

A COMMUNITY STANDS WITH THE FAMILIES

In the days following the crash, McPherson residents and local businesses organized fundraisers, meal trains and other efforts to support the Adrian and Schafer families.

The response reflected the wider impact of the tragedy on a community where the loss of a child and a local educator has been felt far beyond the immediate families.

For Cole’s loved ones, the memories of his childhood — including his love of soccer and the things that made him unique — remain an enduring part of his legacy.

One message has become a way for people to honor his memory:

“Laugh Like Cole, Love Like Cole, Live Like Cole.”

As family, friends and classmates continue to grieve, the words offer a reminder to carry forward the joy, love and spirit associated with the little boy they have lost.

Cole was just six years old. Although his life ended far too soon, those who gathered to remember him made clear that his memory will remain part of the McPherson community.

May his family find comfort in the support surrounding them, and may Cole be remembered with love.
