TRIBUTES POUR IN FOR “BEAUTIFUL” SAL GALLOWAY AFTER WOMAN IS SWEPT OUT TO SEA DURING STORM
Sal Galloway, who was in her 50s, died after being swept into the sea while reportedly walking her dog along the Isle of Wight coastline. Friends and relatives have shared heartfelt tributes as police prepare a report for the coroner.
A COASTAL WALK ENDS IN TRAGEDY
Tributes have poured in for Sal Galloway after she died during severe weather on the Isle of Wight, leaving family members and friends devastated.
Sal was reportedly walking her dog along the coastal promenade between Sandown and Shanklin on Monday, October 26, when she was swept into the sea amid dangerous conditions.
Emergency services were alerted at approximately 11:17 a.m. after concerns were raised about a woman in the water near Lake, on Sandown Bay.
Police, paramedics, HM Coastguard rescue teams, an RNLI lifeboat and a search-and-rescue helicopter were involved in the emergency response. Despite their efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her body was recovered from the water shortly after midday, to the south of Sandown Pier.
FRIENDS REMEMBER A MUCH-LOVED WOMAN
Following news of her death, relatives and friends took to social media to share memories of Sal and express their shock at the loss.
One relative paid tribute to her as a “beautiful” cousin, expressing disbelief that she was gone.
A friend remembered Sal as someone who was kind and welcoming, saying she “always had time for everyone.”
Others shared condolences with her family and spoke about the many people who knew and cared about her. Members of the scootering community also paid tribute, reflecting the friendships she had formed over the years.
One person who described Sal as a childhood best friend said she would be deeply missed.
The messages paint a picture of a woman whose life touched many people and whose loss has left a painful void among those who knew her.
MAJOR RESCUE OPERATION LAUNCHED
The incident triggered a large-scale search along the coastline as emergency crews worked to locate and recover the woman.
A Coastguard helicopter was dispatched from Lee-on-Solent, while Bembridge RNLI’s all-weather lifeboat joined the operation. Coastguard rescue teams and police also attended the scene.
Police temporarily closed the coastal walkway between Sandown and Shanklin and established a cordon near Sandown Esplanade while the response was underway.
Authorities said Sal’s next of kin had been informed, and a file would be prepared for the coroner. The precise circumstances surrounding how she entered the water have not been fully established through the official process.
The status of the dog she was reportedly walking with was not confirmed in the reports available.
DANGEROUS CONDITIONS DURING STORM BOELO
Sal’s death came amid severe weather affecting parts of the United Kingdom, with Storm Boelo bringing powerful winds and hazardous coastal conditions.
The Isle of Wight Council issued a safety warning urging residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution near beaches, sea walls and exposed coastal paths.
People were advised to keep well away from slipways, cliff edges and sea walls, and never to turn their backs on the sea. Dog walkers were also urged to keep their pets on leads.
Large waves can reach unexpectedly far inland, making promenades and coastal walkways dangerous even for people who remain on land. The council advised the public to check weather forecasts and tide times before visiting the coast.
Anyone who sees a person in difficulty in the water should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard rather than putting themselves at risk by entering dangerous conditions.
A COMMUNITY LEFT GRIEVING
For Sal’s family and friends, the tragedy is more than a storm-related incident. It is the sudden loss of someone they loved, remembered and valued.
The tributes shared online have reflected her friendships, her kindness and the many people who will feel her absence.
As the coroner’s process moves forward, questions about the precise circumstances of the incident remain. Police have confirmed that the woman’s next of kin were informed, but the official statement did not itself name her; Sal Galloway was identified in media reports and tributes from people who knew her.
Sal Galloway is being remembered with love by those whose lives she touched. May her family and friends find comfort in their memories and in the support surrounding them. 🤍
