MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO MURDERING MICROSOFT WORKER JENNIFER SYMONDS, 44, FOUND DEAD IN RIVER THAMES
Jennifer Symonds was discovered in the water near a private members’ club in Henley-on-Thames in March. Eight months later, the man charged with her murder has admitted the killing.
A 45-year-old man has pleaded guilty to murdering former Microsoft employee Jennifer Symonds, whose body was discovered in the River Thames earlier this year.
Nelio Gouveia appeared at Oxford Crown Court on Thursday, October 29, where he admitted murdering the 44-year-old in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.
He was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing, which is scheduled for November 20.
Jennifer’s death prompted a murder investigation after her body was found in the river near Phyllis Court, a private members’ club on the banks of the Thames, on March 6.
HER BODY WAS FOUND BESIDE THE RIVER
Police were called at approximately 7:50am after reports that a woman had been found in the water near Phyllis Court Drive.
Specialist officers and police divers attended the scene, and Jennifer’s body was recovered from the river.
A post-mortem examination established that she had died from drowning.
Thames Valley Police launched a murder investigation, and Gouveia was arrested on the same day.
Police confirmed that the defendant and Jennifer were known to one another.
A CAREER AT MICROSOFT
Jennifer had worked for Microsoft since 2018, according to her professional profile.
She was a senior customer success account manager at the company’s UK headquarters in Reading.
She had also studied physical geography at the University of Gloucestershire between 2000 and 2003, where she captained the university hockey team.
Her death shocked friends and people who knew her in the Henley-on-Thames community.
EMOTIONAL SCENES IN COURT
Three of Jennifer’s friends attended the hearing at Oxford Crown Court.
They appeared emotional after Gouveia entered his guilty plea, bringing an important development in a case that had remained under investigation for months.
Detective Inspector Rob Underhill, the senior investigating officer, said his thoughts remained with Jennifer’s family, who had lost someone dear to them.
He welcomed the guilty plea and said the case demonstrated the commitment of Thames Valley Police to investigating violence against women and girls.
SENTENCING EXPECTED LATER THIS MONTH
Following his guilty plea, Gouveia was remanded in custody.
He is due to return to Oxford Crown Court on November 20 for sentencing before Mr Justice Jay.
For Jennifer’s family and friends, the admission of guilt marks a significant moment after months of waiting for answers.
But the loss of a woman who had built a career, friendships and a life in her community remains deeply painful.
Jennifer was 44 years old. Her loved ones are now left to remember her while the legal process moves towards sentencing.
