“WE’RE GOING TO CRASH INTO THE GROUND”: FINAL AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL RECORDINGS REVEAL TERRIFYING MOMENTS BEFORE FLORIDA LEARJET CRASH THAT KILLED NINE
The Learjet 60 was descending at an extraordinary rate when the pilot made a desperate mayday call. The aircraft crashed near a mobile home community in Palm Beach County, Florida, killing all nine people aboard.
Chilling air traffic control recordings have captured the final moments of a private jet as it plunged toward the ground in South Florida, killing all nine people aboard.
The Learjet 60 crashed near a mobile home community in Palm Beach County, Florida, shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
The aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was travelling to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when the emergency unfolded.
In the minutes before the crash, the pilot contacted air traffic control to report moderate turbulence and light, clear icing conditions. Initially, the conditions were described as manageable.
But the situation quickly became critical.
Pilot issued desperate mayday calls as aircraft plunged
Recordings of the communications between the cockpit and air traffic control reveal how rapidly the emergency developed.
The pilot first reported that the aircraft was descending at approximately 8,000 feet per minute before issuing a mayday call and reporting an even faster descent.
“We’re descending 8,000 – mayday, mayday – we’re descending 10,000 feet per minute,” the pilot said.
The situation continued to deteriorate. The pilot later reported that the aircraft was in an overspeed condition and descending at approximately 20,000 feet per minute.
“We are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute,” the pilot reportedly told controllers.
The pilot then made a devastating statement about the aircraft’s condition.
“We’re going to crash into the ground.”
An air traffic controller attempted to maintain contact, responding:
“November two bravo delta, I’m here with you, talk to me.”
The final communications included a report that the aircraft was descending at approximately 22,000 feet per minute. One of the last recorded transmissions ended with the words:
“We’re out of time.”
Flight-tracking data indicated that the descent rate may briefly have exceeded 32,000 feet per minute.
The recordings provide a disturbing account of the final moments, but investigators have not yet established what caused the aircraft to enter such a rapid descent.
Jet crashed near homes and erupted into a fireball
The aircraft came down near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North, in the Greenacres area of Palm Beach County.
Videos recorded by witnesses showed the jet plunging toward the ground before a huge explosion sent flames and thick smoke into the air.
The impact left a large crater in the roadway and scattered aircraft debris across the surrounding area. Nearby properties were also affected, with at least one mobile home sustaining damage.
Witnesses described a powerful explosion and said debris and flames spread across the crash site.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis visited the area and described the incident as “cataclysmic.” He also said the aircraft appeared to be travelling down like a missile.
The crash prompted a major emergency response involving firefighters, law enforcement and other emergency personnel.
All nine people aboard confirmed dead
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine people aboard the aircraft had died.
The identities of those on board had not been publicly released in the initial reports.
Authorities said there were no reports of anyone on the ground being killed or injured, although the crash caused significant damage and disruption in the surrounding neighborhood.
Approximately 600 residents from the nearby mobile home community were affected and faced evacuation or temporary relocation while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.
Local officials arranged shelter assistance for residents who could not immediately return to their homes.
Military Trail was closed in both directions between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North as the response continued. Officials warned that the closure could remain in place for an extended period because of the damage and investigation.
What is known about the aircraft?
The aircraft was identified as a Learjet 60 bearing registration number N722BD.
According to federal aviation records cited by local media, it was registered to LR60271 LLC, a company based in Wilmington, Delaware.
The jet had departed Austin, Texas, earlier on Sunday and was bound for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas.
The aircraft’s rapid descent, the reported icing and turbulence, and the weather conditions in the area are among the details that investigators will examine. However, no official cause has been established.
Federal investigators begin examining the crash
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Investigators will examine the wreckage, aircraft systems, flight data and available communications to determine what happened during the final minutes of the flight.
The air traffic control recordings are an important part of the available evidence, but they do not by themselves establish why the aircraft lost control or descended so rapidly.
Officials have not announced a definitive explanation for the crash.
For the families of the nine people aboard, the tragedy has brought devastating loss. Meanwhile, residents of the nearby community are left dealing with damaged homes, disruption and the aftermath of an aircraft crash that unfolded just beyond their doorsteps.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are expected to provide further information as more evidence becomes available.
