HEARTBREAKING TRAGEDY: 10-YEAR-OLD JALAYSHIA “MALAYSHIA” ALFORD FOUND DEAD IN CAR TRUNK AS FOSTER MOTHER FACES MURDER CHARGES
LINDENWOLD, NEW JERSEY — November 6, 2026
A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken communities in Philadelphia and New Jersey after 10-year-old Jalayshia “Malayshia” Alford, who had been missing for more than a week, was found dead inside the trunk of a car in Lindenwold, New Jersey.
What began as an urgent search for a missing little girl ended in devastating circumstances. Authorities have now charged her foster mother in connection with her death.
According to law enforcement officials, Malayshia’s body was discovered late Wednesday night, November 4, inside a Lincoln sedan parked at the Stonington Court Apartments on the 1800 block of Laurel Road in Lindenwold, Camden County, New Jersey.
The discovery brought an end to a 10-day search involving Philadelphia police, the FBI, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and members of the local community.
A LITTLE GIRL WHO HAD BEEN MISSING FOR DAYS
Malayshia was living in foster care with 36-year-old Carprice (also reported as Caprice) Williams at a residence on the 500 block of North Simpson Street in West Philadelphia. According to her family, she had been in the foster home for approximately two years.
She was reported missing on October 26, 2026.
According to the initial account provided to police, Malayshia had left the residence that morning to walk to her school bus stop but never returned home.
The Philadelphia Police Department issued a missing-child alert, describing her as approximately 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighing around 70 pounds. She was last reported wearing a blue school uniform and glasses.
Authorities, volunteers and members of the community worked tirelessly to locate her. Search efforts expanded across West Philadelphia, including nearby wooded areas and Cobbs Creek Park.
The FBI also joined the investigation as concerns about the child’s safety grew.
QUESTIONS EMERGED ABOUT THE TIMELINE
As investigators examined the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, several questions emerged about the timeline provided by the adults responsible for her care.
According to family members, Malayshia’s aunt, Yolanda Brown, was initially told that the little girl had been taken by her biological mother. However, after contacting her sister, the family learned that Malayshia was not with her.
Investigators also discovered that Malayshia had apparently been seen returning home from school on October 22. Her family said she did not attend school on October 23 or October 26.
Authorities later revealed that surveillance footage showed Malayshia’s body apparently being removed from the West Philadelphia residence during the early morning hours of October 26.
That footage became a significant breakthrough in the investigation, helping detectives identify a vehicle connected to the case.
HER BODY WAS DISCOVERED IN A CAR IN NEW JERSEY
On Wednesday night, November 4, investigators followed leads connected to the vehicle and eventually located it at an apartment complex in Lindenwold, New Jersey.
At approximately 11 p.m., Malayshia’s body was discovered inside the trunk.
According to prosecutors, investigators had traced the vehicle and obtained information from a person who helped lead them to the location.
The car was reportedly connected to a relative of the foster mother.
A preliminary medical examination determined that Malayshia died from blunt force trauma, and her death was classified as a homicide.
Authorities have not released all the details surrounding the circumstances of her death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
FOSTER MOTHER CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH HER DEATH
On Thursday, November 5, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner and Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel announced charges against 36-year-old Carprice Williams, identified in other reports as Caprice Williams.
Williams, who had been caring for Malayshia, faces multiple charges, including:
- Murder.
- Endangering the welfare of a child.
- Reckless endangerment.
- Tampering with evidence.
- Abuse of a corpse.
- Additional related offenses.
Investigators also questioned another individual believed to have information about the movement and disposal of the child’s remains.
Authorities have not publicly established that every person questioned was involved in the crime.
The charges represent allegations, and Williams is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
FAMILY AND COMMUNITY LEFT DEVASTATED
Throughout the search, Malayshia’s relatives had been desperately hoping for her safe return.
Her aunt, Yolanda Brown, described her as a shy, timid and intelligent little girl who had three siblings.
Her former teacher, Tashonna Moore, also remembered her as a sweet and kind child.
Speaking about the devastating news, Moore expressed how deeply the disappearance had affected her, saying she had been unable to focus after learning that the little girl was missing.
Philadelphia officials also expressed their grief.
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel spoke about the future that had been taken from the child, emphasizing that she deserved safety, love and the opportunity to grow up.
Mayor Cherelle Parker said the tragedy had shaken her deeply and expressed her condolences to Malayshia’s family.
Meanwhile, community members gathered to mourn the little girl, leaving balloons and stuffed animals near the apartment complex where her body was discovered.
QUESTIONS REMAIN AS INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
Malayshia’s disappearance and death have raised painful questions about the circumstances surrounding her care, the timeline of events and whether more could have been done to protect her.
Her relatives had previously spoken publicly about their efforts to regain custody of her after she entered the foster care system.
The investigation is continuing, with Philadelphia police, prosecutors and federal authorities working to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death.
For a family that spent days hoping and praying for a different outcome, the discovery has brought unimaginable heartbreak.
Jalayshia “Malayshia” Alford was only 10 years old. She should have had the chance to grow up, go to school, spend time with her siblings and experience all the ordinary joys of childhood.
Instead, her name has become the center of a heartbreaking case that has left two communities searching for answers.
Rest in peace, sweet Malayshia. You deserved so much more.
Justice for Jalayshia Alford.
