A SPINA BIFIDA DIAGNOSIS AT 20 WEEKS CHANGED LUCAS’S PATH — BUT HIS JOURNEY IS FILLED WITH COURAGE, CARE, AND UNEXPECTED JOY

When Lucas’s parents received unexpected news during a routine 20-week scan, their world shifted in an instant. Their unborn son had been diagnosed with spina bifida, a condition that affects the development of the spine and can lead to lifelong challenges.
For his mother, Viva, those early moments were filled with uncertainty and fear.
“We didn’t know what the future would look like,” she shared. “There were so many questions, and at times, it all felt overwhelming.”

But in the midst of that uncertainty, the family found guidance and hope through the Texas Children’s Fetal Center, where a dedicated team of specialists stepped in to support them every step of the way.
Before Lucas was even born, doctors performed fetal surgery — a delicate and complex procedure aimed at improving his condition early on. From that moment, Lucas began a journey of care surrounded by a team that not only brought medical expertise but also compassion.

“The specialists are not only experts but also truly kind people,” Viva said. “They cared about Lucas as a child, not just a diagnosis. That made all the difference to us.”
Since his birth, Lucas has continued to receive care through the hospital’s spina bifida program, where his family knows they will always have consistent support as he grows.

For Viva and her family, this journey has been filled with challenges — but also moments of unexpected joy.
“There are hard days, of course,” she admitted. “But Lucas has this incredible way of reminding us what really matters. His smile, his strength — it gives us hope every single day.”

The family plans to remain connected to the care team throughout Lucas’s life, knowing they are not facing this journey alone.
“To the team at Texas Children’s—thank you,” Viva said. “Thank you for your expertise, for your kindness, and for walking beside us during some of the most difficult moments of our lives.”
Now, she hopes their story can bring comfort to other families facing similar diagnoses.

“It’s okay to grieve. It’s okay to be scared,” she shared gently. “Take it one day at a time. You’ll discover a strength you never knew you had.”
Her message is simple, yet powerful:
“Your child is more than a condition. And even in the hardest moments, there will be joy — sometimes in ways you never expected.”
