A Face Reborn Through Courage and Science

A Face Reborn Through Courage and Science
Born with a rare condition known as giant congenital melanocytic nevus, Qibao faced a life marked by both medical risk and social challenges. This uncommon skin disorder covered a large portion of her face with a dark lesion, carrying the potential danger of developing into melanoma over time. Beyond the physical risks, the visible nature of the condition also exposed her to stigma and emotional hardship from an early age.

In an effort to protect her health and improve her quality of life, doctors in Shanghai undertook a highly complex and delicate medical approach known as tissue expansion therapy. This procedure involved inserting four silicone expanders beneath areas of healthy skin. Over time, these expanders were gradually filled with saline solution, carefully stretching the skin to generate new tissue.
Although the process created visible swelling and significant changes to her appearance during treatment, it ultimately allowed surgeons to remove the nevus and reconstruct her face using her own newly grown skin. The journey was long, physically demanding, and emotionally intense, especially for someone so young.

Through remarkable resilience and bravery, combined with the support of medical professionals and generous donations, Qibao successfully overcame the most critical stages of her treatment. Today, her story stands as a powerful example of how modern medicine, compassion, and determination can come together to transform a life, restoring not only health but also confidence and hope for the future.
