A Doll That Reflects the Truth of Every Child

A Doll That Reflects the Truth of Every Child

As a hospital social worker, Amy Jandrisevits noticed something deeply troubling: children with unique physical conditions never saw themselves represented in their toys. For a child already facing medical treatment, receiving a “perfect” commercial doll often reinforced a painful message—that they were the ones who were somehow broken. That realization became the starting point for something far more meaningful.

She went on to create A Doll Like Me, a project dedicated to crafting handmade dolls that faithfully mirror each child’s appearance. Every detail matters. These dolls are designed with the same scars, birthmarks, medical devices, or limb differences that the children themselves have. Instead of hiding what makes them different, the dolls gently reflect it back with honesty and care.

What these children receive is far more than a toy. It becomes a powerful therapeutic tool—one that validates their identity and helps them feel seen in a world that often overlooks them. Holding a doll that looks just like them can shift how they see themselves, replacing feelings of isolation with recognition and quiet confidence.

Through donations, the financial burden is removed from families, ensuring that access to these dolls is not limited by cost. Over time, this effort has reached hundreds of children, helping them move away from feeling invisible. They begin to understand that their appearance, no matter how different, is not something to hide but something that deserves acknowledgment and acceptance.
