A Race Against Time: The Courageous Battle of Five-Month-Old Camila Against ALCAPA

What began as a common childhood illness quickly transformed into a medical crisis that no parent is ever prepared to face. When baby Camila started coughing and wheezing, her parents assumed it was a routine respiratory issue. However, the reality was far more devastating: their five-month-old daughter was in active heart failure. Since late February, this family has been thrust into a harrowing journey through the complexities of a rare and life-threatening congenital condition known as ALCAPA.

ALCAPA occurs when the left coronary artery is abnormally connected to the pulmonary artery instead of the aorta, depriving the heart muscle of oxygen-rich blood. Because many infants do not show immediate symptoms, the defect often goes undetected until the heart begins to fail. In Camila’s case, the diagnosis only came to light while her small body was already fighting off a separate infection, leaving her heart struggling to sustain her life.

The gravity of her condition necessitated an emergency life-flight to Texas Children’s Hospital on February 28. Though surgeons performed a complex repair on March 2, the road to recovery has been fraught with setbacks. Despite the successful surgery, Camila’s heart remained too weak to function on its own. On May 5th, doctors were forced to intervene again, placing a Berlin Heart pump to serve as a mechanical bridge. This device now does the work of her heart, providing her body with the time it needs to potentially heal or sustaining her while she waits on the transplant list.

Throughout this unimaginable ordeal, Camila’s parents have remained steadfast in their faith, describing their daughter as a warrior who refuses to give up. As she continues her fight in the intensive care unit, her family clings to hope and the power of community support.
