“I’M RICH. JUST FINE ME.” — FEDERAL CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION EXPANDS AFTER TOURIST ALLEGEDLY THREW ROCK AT BELOVED MONK SEAL “LANI” IN MAUI

What started as a disturbing beach incident in Lahaina, Hawaii has now exploded into a nationwide controversy — and federal authorities are officially involved. 🇺🇸

According to Hawaii officials, the case involving endangered Hawaiian monk seal “Lani” has been escalated to NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement for potential federal prosecution after a viral video appeared to show a tourist hurling a large rock toward the protected animal.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Witnesses say the incident occurred near Front Street in Lahaina on May 5, when a 37-year-old visitor from Seattle allegedly ignored repeated warnings from locals to stay away from the seal.

Then came the moment that shocked millions online.

Viral footage reportedly shows the man picking up what witnesses described as a “coconut-sized rock” and throwing it directly toward Lani while she was swimming near shore.

Local resident Kaylee Schnitzer, who witnessed the scene unfold, said the rock appeared to be aimed toward the seal’s head.

Shortly after the video spread online, outrage exploded across social media platforms, with thousands demanding arrests, lifetime bans from Hawaii, and harsher penalties for wildlife harassment.

THE QUOTE THAT IGNITED NATIONAL FURY

According to witnesses and multiple reports, the suspect allegedly responded to criticism by saying:

“I’m rich. Just fine me.”

That statement instantly became the center of public outrage online, with many accusing the suspect of arrogance and believing wealth could place him above the law.

FEDERAL AUTHORITIES NOW INVOLVED

The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources confirmed the investigation has been turned over to NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement because Hawaiian monk seals are protected under both the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Authorities say the suspect was detained and questioned but has NOT yet been formally charged. Officials also confirmed he requested legal counsel and declined to make a statement.

If charges are ultimately filed, penalties under federal law could reportedly include massive fines and even prison time.

WHO IS “LANI”?

For Maui residents, this was not just “another seal.”

Lani is considered a beloved symbol of West Maui and has reportedly been known in the community for years — especially after returning to Lahaina’s shoreline following the devastating 2023 wildfires.

Many locals say seeing Lani resting peacefully along the coast became a symbol of healing and resilience for the island.

That’s one reason why emotions exploded so intensely after the video surfaced.

Maui Mayor Richard Bissen publicly condemned the incident, saying:

“This is not the kind of visitor we welcome on Maui.”

SOCIAL MEDIA ERUPTS

As the footage spread across TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and X, millions reacted with anger and disbelief.

Some called for immediate prosecution.
Others demanded stronger wildlife protection laws.
Many Hawaii residents said the incident reflected growing frustration over disrespectful tourism behavior on the islands.

Another viral clip later appeared to show the suspect being physically confronted by a local resident after the alleged attack on Lani — though officials have not announced any related assault charges connected to that separate incident.

LATEST UPDATE ON LANI

Despite widespread fears after the incident, officials and Maui authorities say Lani has since been seen again and is believed to be safe.

But the investigation is far from over.

NOAA and federal investigators are still reviewing evidence, witness statements, and viral footage as pressure mounts nationwide for accountability.
