HAWAII MOURNS THE LOSS OF BELOVED MONK SEAL “KAʻALE”

HAWAII MOURNS THE LOSS OF BELOVED MONK SEAL “KAʻALE”
Hawaiʻi has lost one of its most cherished ocean residents. RH32, affectionately known as Kaʻale, was found deceased off the Waiʻanae coast, ending a life closely watched and protected by local volunteers, marine rescue teams, and conservation agencies.
Kaʻale was far more than just another seal. Over the years, he became a familiar and beloved figure along Hawaiʻi’s shores, surviving hook injuries, entanglements, and other dangers caused by human activity. His resilience and recurring appearances turned him into a symbol of hope, perseverance, and the deep bond between people and marine life.
On May 6, response teams, with support from multiple agencies, recovered Kaʻale’s body. The exact cause of death remains under investigation. Officials are urging the public to refrain from speculation as scientists conduct thorough testing.
For years, countless Hawaiians reported sightings, followed safe viewing practices, and celebrated each encounter with Kaʻale, making him an integral part of the coastal community. His presence reminded everyone of the fragile beauty of the ocean and the importance of protecting it.
Today, many mourn not just a seal, but a friend of the islands—a creature whose life touched hearts and inspired a community to care for the ocean.
Rest in peace, Kaʻale 🦭
