Pope Leo XIV’s General Audience from St. Peter’s Square

During his General Audience in St. Peter’s Square on May 27, 2026, Pope Leo XIV addressed thousands of pilgrims and faithful gathered in the heart of the Vatican. The audience focused on the theme of the Sacred Liturgy, as the Pope continued his catechesis on the documents of the Second Vatican Council, especially Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy.

Standing before the crowd, Pope Leo XIV reminded the faithful that the liturgy is not simply a religious ceremony or an external tradition. It is the living place where the Church encounters Christ, receives strength from Him, and is renewed in faith. According to the Pope, the liturgy immerses believers in the mystery of Christ’s passion, death, resurrection, and glorification.

The Pope emphasized that Christ is present in the Word proclaimed, in the sacraments, in the ministers who celebrate, in the gathered community, and most especially in the Eucharist. He explained that every liturgical celebration becomes a true expression of the Church in prayer — a moment where the faithful are shaped by God’s grace and called to live what they celebrate.

Pope Leo XIV also spoke about the relationship between tradition and renewal. He said that authentic liturgical progress must remain rooted in the living tradition of the Church. Vatican News reported that he stressed the importance of preserving sound tradition while allowing the liturgy to continue serving the mission of evangelization in every age.

The Pope warned against confusion or personal improvisation in liturgical matters, encouraging priests and all those responsible for worship to respect the texts, rites, and regulations of the Church. For him, fidelity to the liturgy is not rigidity, but a sign of humility before God and communion with the whole Church.

The scene in St. Peter’s Square was deeply moving: pilgrims from many nations gathered under the Vatican sky, listening, praying, and receiving the Pope’s blessing. Pope Leo XIV greeted English-speaking pilgrims from countries including England, Ireland, Tanzania, India, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Canada, and the United States, invoking upon them the joy and peace of the risen Christ.

The heart of Pope Leo XIV’s message was clear: the liturgy gives life to the Church, strengthens the faithful, builds unity, and sends Christians back into the world as witnesses of faith, peace, and hope.
