Miracle Baby Born Weighing Less Than 1 Pound Finally Goes Home Healthy After 150 Days in NICU

A baby girl born weighing less than one pound has captured hearts around the world after surviving against overwhelming odds and finally going home healthy after spending nearly five months in intensive care.

Kallie Bender was born prematurely in Phoenix, Arizona, at just 25 weeks of pregnancy. She weighed only 13.1 ounces at birth and measured just 10.5 inches long. Doctors immediately recognized the situation as life threatening and rushed her into specialized neonatal care.

A High Risk Pregnancy Turned Into an Emergency

According to reports, Kallie’s mother, Ebonie Bender, had a high risk pregnancy due to severe blood pressure complications. During a routine checkup, doctors discovered that the baby was not growing normally inside the womb.

Medical specialists also found dangerously low fluid levels surrounding the baby. Doctors later diagnosed a condition called absent end diastolic flow, which reduces blood flow from the placenta and prevents a baby from receiving enough nutrients.

After several days of monitoring and testing, doctors concluded that delivering Kallie 15 weeks early was her only chance of survival.

Her mother later admitted she was terrified of what might happen next.

Fighting for Life in the NICU

Immediately after birth, Kallie was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.

Doctors placed her on an oscillator ventilator to help her fragile lungs breathe. She also underwent surgery to repair a heart condition known as patent ductus arteriosus, a hole between two major blood vessels near the heart.

Despite being born so early, Kallie avoided many of the severe complications commonly seen in micro preemies, including dangerous brain bleeding and life threatening infections.

Over the following months, she slowly gained strength and weight while surrounded by constant medical care.

The Emotional Support That Helped Save Her

Doctors credited not only advanced neonatal medicine, but also the dedication of Kallie’s parents.

Her mother and father reportedly drove nearly 40 minutes every day to visit her in the NICU. They spent hours beside her bed doing skin to skin contact, reading to her, and playing music while she recovered.

Dr. Vinit Manuel, medical director of the NICU, explained that family involvement can have a major impact on premature babies.

Research over recent decades has shown that survival rates for extremely premature babies have improved significantly because of advances in neonatal care and stronger family support systems.

After nearly 150 days in the hospital, Kallie was finally discharged and allowed to go home with her family. By that time, she had grown from just 13 ounces to a healthy seven pounds.

Although she still required temporary oxygen support and a feeding tube, doctors described her progress as remarkable.
