14-Year-Old California Teen Wins 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Record-Breaking Finale

14-Year-Old California Teen Wins National Spelling Bee After Historic Spell-Off

A 14-year-old student from California has officially been crowned the champion of the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee after delivering one of the most impressive performances in the competition’s history.
Shrey Parikh, from Rancho Cucamonga, California, secured the national title during a dramatic final round held at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. The championship match ended with a high-pressure 90-second spell-off that left audiences stunned.
According to competition officials, Parikh correctly spelled 32 words within the time limit — setting a new record for the tiebreaker format.
A Dramatic Final Battle
The final showdown came after 18 consecutive flawless rounds between Parikh and 12-year-old finalist Ishaan Gupta from Jersey City, New Jersey. Neither contestant made a mistake during the traditional rounds, forcing organizers to move to the fast-paced spell-off format introduced in recent years.
During the rapid-fire challenge, Parikh outscored Gupta by spelling 32 words correctly compared to Gupta’s 25.
His championship-winning word was “bromocriptine,” a medical term referring to a dopamine-related compound.
Throughout the competition, Parikh successfully spelled several extremely difficult words, including “fais-dodo,” “cywyddau,” and “taurokathapsia.”
Years of Dedication Paid Off
This was not Parikh’s first appearance at the prestigious competition. He previously competed in earlier years and finished in third place in 2024, making this year’s victory especially meaningful.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee, founded in 1925, is considered one of the most prestigious academic competitions in the United States. Contestants from across the country spend years preparing for the event, memorizing complex vocabulary, language origins, and pronunciation patterns.
Parikh’s victory earned him more than $50,000 in cash prizes along with additional awards and recognition.
Social Media Reacts
Following the broadcast, viewers across social media praised both finalists for their extraordinary composure and intelligence under pressure. Many users described the ending as one of the most exciting finals the competition has ever seen.
The record-breaking finish quickly began trending online, with thousands applauding the dedication and discipline required to compete at such a high level.
