A 14-year-old student from California has officially been crowned the champion of the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee after delivering one of the most impressive performances in the competition’s history.

Shrey Parikh, from Rancho Cucamonga, California, secured the national title during a dramatic final round held at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. The championship match ended with a high-pressure 90-second spell-off that left audiences stunned.

According to competition officials, Parikh correctly spelled 32 words within the time limit — setting a new record for the tiebreaker format.

The final showdown came after 18 consecutive flawless rounds between Parikh and 12-year-old finalist Ishaan Gupta from Jersey City, New Jersey. Neither contestant made a mistake during the traditional rounds, forcing organizers to move to the fast-paced spell-off format introduced in recent years.

During the rapid-fire challenge, Parikh outscored Gupta by spelling 32 words correctly compared to Gupta’s 25.

His championship-winning word was “bromocriptine,” a medical term referring to a dopamine-related compound.
