Canoe Racers Have Dramatic Encounter with Sea Lion Looking to “Be Part of the Team”

What started as a routine canoe race quickly turned into a memorable wildlife encounter when a curious sea lion decided to join the action.

Participants in the event were paddling through coastal waters when they noticed a playful sea lion keeping pace with the racers. At first, the paddlers assumed it was a coincidence—but the animal soon made its intentions clear. With effortless agility, the sea lion swam alongside the canoes, occasionally popping its head onto the boats as if wanting to join in.

“It was both hilarious and a little nerve-wracking,” one racer recalled. “At one point, it actually tried to climb onto the back of our canoe! We all laughed but also made sure to stay safe and give it space.”

Wildlife experts say this kind of behavior is unusual but not unheard of. Sea lions are highly social and naturally curious, sometimes approaching boats, kayaks, and swimmers in search of interaction or play. While most encounters are harmless, officials stress the importance of respecting wildlife and maintaining a safe distance.

The race continued with the unexpected participant paddling alongside the human competitors, delighting spectators and racers alike. Cameras and phones were quickly raised to capture the unusual moment, which soon made the rounds on social media.

For the racers, the experience became a highlight of the event. “We train for speed, endurance, and teamwork,” another competitor said. “But nothing prepares you for a sea lion trying to be part of your team. It made the race unforgettable.”

Officials remind paddlers and ocean-goers that while encounters with wildlife can be exciting, it’s crucial not to feed or touch wild animals, as this can disrupt their natural behaviors and pose risks for both humans and the animals.

The playful sea lion’s brief “team membership” serves as a lighthearted reminder of how unpredictable—and sometimes delightfully interactive—nature can be.
