A 60-year-old Connecticut man has been arrested after witnesses reported a disturbing incident involving a dog at a popular recreational area.
Thomas Michel, of Derby, Connecticut, was taken into custody after police received reports that a dog was allegedly being struck while at O’Sullivan’s Island, a well-known spot frequented by local families and visitors.
According to authorities, several concerned bystanders attempted to intervene after noticing the animal in distress. However, the situation reportedly escalated when Michel allegedly directed threats toward those trying to protect the dog.

Police officers quickly responded to the scene and removed the animal from Michel’s custody. The dog was then transported to a safe location where it could receive care and protection.
During the subsequent investigation, officers allegedly discovered that Michel was in possession of handgun ammunition. Because Michel is a convicted felon with a prior criminal record involving assault and burglary offenses, authorities say the discovery resulted in additional criminal charges.
Michel now faces multiple charges, including animal cruelty, criminal possession of ammunition, threatening in the second degree, and breach of peace.
Officials have not released further details regarding the dog’s condition but confirmed that the animal is no longer in the suspect’s custody.

Local residents praised the actions of the witnesses who chose to step forward rather than ignore what they believed was a troubling situation.
“That dog couldn’t speak for itself,” one resident said. “If people hadn’t acted, nobody knows what might have happened.”
Animal welfare advocates also highlighted the importance of reporting suspected abuse, noting that many cases come to light only because ordinary citizens decide to make a phone call.
For now, the dog remains safe while legal proceedings continue.
The case serves as a reminder that sometimes the difference between suffering and safety comes down to someone being willing to speak up when an animal cannot.
