ANIMAL SERVICES EMPLOYEE ACCUSED OF KEEPING 17 DOGS IN UNSANITARY CONDITIONS, NEGLECT, AND POSSIBLE ILLEGAL ACTIVITY INVOLVING DOGS

A man whose job was to help care for vulnerable animals is now facing serious animal cruelty charges after police allegedly discovered multiple dogs living in distressing conditions at his property.

Isaiah Bethany, 30, an employee of Memphis Animal Services (MAS), was arrested on June 5 after officers executed a search warrant at his South Memphis home.

According to investigators, authorities found 17 dogs on the property, including several animals that allegedly had no access to clean food or water.

Police said one dog was discovered confined inside a kennel without basic necessities, while another was reportedly found with bandaged ears and also lacked adequate food and water.

The situation became even more concerning when officers located nine puppies inside a metal enclosure covered in feces. Six additional dogs were found outside, with five allegedly chained to a tree.

Detectives also reported discovering equipment commonly associated with dog-training activities linked to organized animal fighting investigations, including tethers attached to cages. Authorities are continuing to investigate after receiving reports that additional dogs may have been buried on the property.

According to police, Bethany arrived while investigators were at the residence and acknowledged that the dogs belonged to him.

He was subsequently arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals. Records show he is being held on a $10,000 bond.

Following the discovery, Memphis Animal Services immediately removed the surviving animals from the property. The rescue included eight adult dogs and a litter of puppies, all of which are now receiving care.

In a statement, the City of Memphis emphasized that it maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward animal cruelty and confirmed that steps are being taken to terminate Bethany’s employment.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the animals found at the residence.
