TRUSTED TO CARE FOR FAMILY PET — FLORIDA MAN ACCUSED OF 𝚂𝙷𝙾𝙾𝚃𝙸𝙽𝙶 CAT HE CLAIMED HAD ‘RUN AWAY’

A Florida man has been arrested after investigators alleged he fatally injured a cat that had been entrusted to his care before later claiming the animal had simply disappeared.
Joshua Carl Brooks, 40, of Live Oak, was taken into custody following a lengthy investigation by the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office into the death of a domestic cat that occurred earlier this year.
According to authorities, the case began in January 2026 when deputies received information suggesting the animal had been deliberately shot with a pellet gun.

Investigators say Brooks initially denied harming the cat and allegedly told others that the pet had run away.
However, detectives continued gathering evidence over the following months. During the investigation, authorities reportedly obtained sworn statements from multiple witnesses who provided similar accounts of what they claimed to have seen.
Officials also say physical evidence recovered during the investigation contributed to the decision to pursue charges.

As a result, Brooks was arrested and charged with Aggravated Animal Cruelty, a felony offense under Florida law.
The case has generated strong reactions within the local community, with many residents expressing sadness over the allegations involving a family pet that depended entirely on human care and protection.
“This animal was supposed to be safe,” one local resident said after learning of the arrest. “That’s what makes the allegations so upsetting.”

Authorities emphasized that the charge remains an allegation and that Brooks is entitled to due process through the court system.
If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to five years, along with a fine of up to $5,000.
The investigation has renewed conversations among animal welfare advocates about responsible pet care and the importance of reporting suspected cruelty cases so concerns can be properly examined by law enforcement.
